    Great care, some accessibility concerns

I placed my loved one here and overall I'm pleased: the staff are outstanding, care is excellent, and Chef Alice's meals are wonderful in a clean, small, homey setting. Activities are offered and can be fun, but residents often need help getting involved and programming/transportation can be inconsistent-I've seen both rides to shopping/appointments and times with no van. Accessibility is a concern (too many stairs, a door that's hard with a walker). New ownership has changed the feel for some; it's good value if you confirm activity, transport, and access meet your needs.

    About Ascutney House

Ascutney House is a small residential care home in Ascutney, Vermont, licensed as a Residential Care Type 3 community with space for up to 15 residents. Jennifer Silva, RN, owns and operates Ascutney House, along with Davis Home in Windsor and Brookwood Senior Care Home in North Springfield. The community helps men, women, and couples who can't live alone anymore but don't need a full nursing home, and offers care for those needing assisted living or memory care. The setting feels homelike and close-knit, with shared and private rooms where residents have their own phones, cable TV, and internet. There's an open door for visitors day and night, and friends and pets can come by to share a meal or visit.

Residents get help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, grooming, and using the bathroom, along with medication management and supervision at all hours. Medical staff includes a registered nurse and licensed practical nurse on-site or reachable by phone any time. Staff stay awake overnight for safety and are available 24 hours, and each room has an emergency button. Ascutney House provides regular transportation within twenty miles for medical appointments, weekly housekeeping, laundry, and all meals and snacks. The dining room serves scheduled meals and accommodates allergies, diabetes, kosher, vegetarian diets, and there's all-day dining for when residents get hungry at different times.

The property is wheelchair accessible, with showers and transfers for one or two people, including lifts for those who need them. The community supports people who may wander or have behaviors from memory loss, and can care for non-ambulatory individuals with help for incontinence and diabetes, including insulin shots. Residents will find a quiet garden, walking paths, indoor and outdoor common spaces, parking, and places for outdoor smoking if they wish.

Staff organize daily things to do like movie nights, cards, music, themed parties, community outings, shopping, apple picking, and both on-site and off-site events, plus devotional services. People can join offsite appointments with visiting nurses, podiatrists, and therapists in physical, occupational, or speech fields. Ascutney House also offers respite care for short stays and hospice for those who need it. The building feels peaceful, supporting strong bonds with caregivers and other residents. Social workers, nurses, and local doctors recognize the community for its care. The location sits in the town center, close to shopping, restaurants, and other businesses, making errands and visits pretty easy. Payment options include private pay, Vermont Medicaid with ACCS, or Choices for Care (ERC). The team wants residents to feel comfortable and safe while keeping as much independence as possible, with help nearby whenever needed.
