    Unsafe, unsanitary, understaffed care facility

I had a mixed but mostly negative experience. A few nurses, therapists and new leadership seemed caring and rehab-focused, and parts of the building looked improved, but overall staffing and responsiveness are unacceptable. I witnessed delayed/ignored medical attention (including failure to call 911), missed meds and therapy, falls, unresolved wounds and hygiene issues (dried blood, urine/feces left, roach/odor problems). Food, communication and billing were poor (cold meals, unreturned calls, refund issues). I would not recommend sending a loved one here until safety, staffing and sanitation are fixed.

    About Greenbrier Regional Medical Center

Greenbrier Regional Medical Center sits at 1017 George Washington Hwy N in Chesapeake, VA, and has a mix of services folks often look for as they get older or need extra care, since they've got skilled nursing, strong rehab, long-term care, and a focus on dementia and Alzheimer's, plus you'll find emergency and urgent care right on site, which helps when things happen suddenly. The center has 120 licensed beds, usually taking care of about 104 residents daily, and offers both private rooms at a daily rate of $220 and semi-private rooms at $206, which seems about what one might expect for this area, and though they've been updating the building and have new management, some recent reports show they've had 52 deficiencies documented, covering things like accidents, infection control, and supervision, so that's something families might want to ask about. There's a range of daily help on offer, since trained personal care assistants help with dressing, grooming, laundry, and dining, and folks have access to podiatry, wound care, occupational therapy, and even mental health services with psychiatrists and psychoanalysts available, which is handy because health needs can change fast. They've got social activities-arts and crafts, wellness programs, and devotional gatherings-plus indoor common rooms, activity spaces, and entertainment options like TV, Wi-Fi, and even a salon/barbershop, so seniors don't always have to leave for day-to-day comforts. The property has some nice touches for comfort and safety like a sprinkler system, guest parking, washers, and dryers, and kitchens or kitchenettes in certain rooms. They run a tight ship with 64.3 full-time staff equivalent and a nurse staffing level below the state average at 3.09 hours per resident per day, and with a nurse turnover of 58.5%, it means staff might change more than in some places, which can matter for continuity of care. Insurance options include long-term care insurance, and they do provide respite care so someone can stay just for a short while, but it's important to note that they're not accepting new patients right now, so families should check back if they're interested. The place emphasizes holistic health and a nurturing environment, focusing on both physical and emotional needs, and the building's been remodeled for comfort and modern use, offering transportation for residents when they need to get out. Families and residents might feel that the variety of care-internal medicine, surgery, outpatient care, and fitness programs-makes life easier, though with past inspection delays and some safety issues flagged, it's a good idea to ask direct questions and tour in person if considering a stay at Greenbrier Regional Medical Center.
