    Beautiful campus but operational hassles

I love the beautiful, well-maintained campus, my apartment, the active social calendar and friendly residents - outings and nature are outstanding. Staff are overwhelmingly caring and helpful, but operational issues (understaffing, inefficiency and slow responses) cause long waits and move-in/setup headaches. Billing and last-minute legal/financial paperwork can be confusing and stressful, and the costs/fees are high. Overall I'm happy and would recommend it if you can afford it, but come prepared to advocate and double-check bills.

About The Fairfax at Belvoir Woods

The Fairfax at Belvoir Woods sits on a 60-acre campus near Fort Belvoir, VA, and has a little bit of everything for seniors who want different types of care as their needs change, and you'll find independent living in both apartments and cottages-347 apartments and 35 cottages to be exact-with meals, housekeeping, and maintenance bundled in the fee, so there's less to worry about for residents who want to spend time doing things they enjoy or just relaxing, and if extra support becomes needed, the campus has assisted living, memory care, nursing and rehab, and adult day care, so folks can stay close to friends and familiar faces if their health changes. There are 52 assisted living suites and 23 memory care suites, with skilled nursing beds available, and the memory care area supports folks with Alzheimer's or other dementias in a setting built to make them comfortable and safe. For recreation, you get walking trails, an indoor pool, an outdoor putting green, tennis courts, a tranquil pond, and even a seven-acre lake stocked for fishing, plus benches and park areas for fresh air and simple pleasures, and if you like wildlife, the Audubon at Home wildlife sanctuary is right there too. There's a community library with cozy seating and lots of books, a game room with a card table for socializing, a whirlpool spa with big windows to the outside, spacious activity rooms for gatherings, a curved bar in the assisted living area, and several sitting rooms with fireplaces and comfy chairs where people often just sit and visit awhile. Meal times take place in bright dining rooms; tables are set up with linens and flowers and dishes, and there's a private dining room for special occasions, with weekly Sunday brunches and happy hours on weekdays for those who like to stay social, and if you like group exercise, there are classes like poker, MahJong, water aerobics, and yoga. The Fairfax is part of several resource networks including VirginiaNavigator, SeniorNavigator, and VeteransNavigator, so veterans and seniors have access to benefits, legal resources, health care support, financial advice, and transportation help-a lot of practical information is on hand in the resource library and directories, which cover over 26,000 services and programs from local to national level, plus educational articles, events, and videos are available for both residents and their families. There are 75 assisted living beds and 56 skilled nursing beds for those needing more support, plus accessible bathrooms with grab bars, and private or semi-private suites designed to let in plenty of natural light, decorated in comfortable, homey styles. The Fairfax at Belvoir Woods operates as both an assisted living facility and a skilled nursing facility, and it's recognized as a continuing care retirement community, so residents can adjust their care plans while staying on the same grounds, and if someone wants to move in and stay active, the vibrant calendar of events, social clubs, and various dining and common areas help create a lively environment where seniors can keep busy or connect with others, as much or as little as they want, with specialist doctors stopping by occasionally for on-campus visits. The facility's earned WELL Health-Safety and WELL Equity Ratings, and it's won a few awards for independent living, assisted living, memory care, and being a top continuing care retirement community, according to U.S. News & World Report for 2025.

    About Sunrise Senior Living

Beginning with a single community in 1981, there are now more than 280 Sunrise Senior Living communities throughout the U.S. and Canada. Each of our communities maintains the mission laid out by Sunrise founders Paul and Terry Klaassen more than 40 years ago: to champion quality of life for all seniors. The Klaassens’ vision to redefine senior care resulted in a resident-centered approach to care that focuses on the individuality of each resident and has set the standard in the assisted living industry. We are defined by our people. Our team of serving hearts are guided by our mission, Principles of Service and Values – all of which help encourage independence, preserve dignity and enable freedom of choice for each resident.
