    Clean, friendly staff; good value

I toured this community and was impressed - very clean, friendly and caring staff, good food, lots of activities and amenities (courtyard, therapy, salon, shuttle) and reasonable pricing. Families I spoke with praised the welcoming, home-like atmosphere and attentive nurses, though I also heard about occasional housekeeping lapses, communication or medication/turnover issues. Overall I felt it's a good, value-driven option if you stay engaged and advocate for your loved one.

About Charter Senior Living of Newport News

Charter Senior Living of Newport News gives older adults many care options, like assisted living, independent living, and memory care, so folks can get the support they need if their health or memory needs change over time, and it does this with the help of caring and experienced staff who are always near, day and night. The community sits on well-kept, landscaped grounds with gardens, a safe courtyard, and outdoor spaces for walking or getting fresh air, and it's about a half-mile from Mary Immaculate Hospital, pretty close to lots of places you might want to go, such as parks, restaurants, or shops, making it a good spot for staying social and active.

Residents choose from one-bedroom and several studio apartments; each place has an emergency call system, smoke and fire alarms, air conditioning, and handy things like in-unit washers, dryers, microwaves, plus weekly cleaning and laundry. Everyone gets electricity and water included, and there's regular help with upkeep inside and outside, so you don't have to worry about repairs or mowing grass. People with pets often like it here, because cats and dogs are welcome, and there's even pet therapy sessions, so folks who like animals can spend time with them.

Charter Senior Living's staff, which includes licensed nurses and memory care-certified associates, help with daily needs such as bathing, getting dressed, or taking medicine, and the care goes up or down depending on what someone needs, whether it's a little supervision or if more help becomes necessary due to health changes, which means people can often stay here longer without having to move somewhere else. For those living with Alzheimer's or dementia, there's the Flourish Memory Care program in a special, secured building, with secure doors and bracelets to prevent wandering, and staff who know how to handle difficult or confused behaviors and help guide residents kindly through their day with activities aimed at helping memory and reducing confusion.

Meals are cooked by professional chefs in big restaurant-style dining rooms, with a private dining room for special occasions and diet menus available for things like gluten free, vegetarian, low salt, or sugar-controlled meals, and residents can expect nutritious food every day plus snacks, sometimes even in the form of cooking classes or happy hours as part of their social calendar. There's plenty to do, with an activity director making sure there's always classes, games, trivia, art, brain fitness, trips, and even exercise classes in the fitness center, and a library, computer area, card/game room, a beauty salon, devotional services for different faiths, plus transportation for errands and outings, and parking for those who still drive or have visitors.

If somebody needs therapy like physical, occupational, or speech help, those services are available right on site, and people recovering from hospital stays can come stay for short-term rehabilitation or respite care. The community has programs to keep everyone engaged and feeling connected, including wellness and family programs, outdoor gardening, and lots of chances for socializing and making new friends. The place is accessible, with wheelchair-friendly bathrooms and showers, and uses safety features like 24-hour emergency call systems throughout.

Charter Senior Living of Newport News is managed by Five Star Senior Living, with over a century of experience behind them, and folks tend to mention that the staff are friendly, helpful, and always around when you need something, doing their best to make everyone feel at home whether you come for a short stay or live here for years, and there's a strong focus on supporting both seniors and their families through the changes that can come with aging.
