    Warm caring clean cozy facility

My grandmother stayed here briefly and I was very pleased - Ginger Elliot and her staff were attentive, compassionate, and treated her (and our family) like family. The small, cozy facility feels home-like: immaculate common areas, clean private rooms with large baths, nice furnishings, courtyard and piano, and delicious on-site meals and activities. Staff went above and beyond with emotional support and loving care. The building shows its age (cracks/need for interior refurbishment) and Medicaid isn't accepted - monthly fees may exceed Social Security. Overall, a warm, caring hidden gem I highly recommend.

About Essex House by American Retirement Homes Inc.

Essex House by American Retirement Homes Inc. sits on a gentle knoll in Tappahannock, Virginia, with a big yellow building and a porch with hanging plants that looks out onto a green lawn, and the place feels friendly and a lot like home because it's small, family-oriented, and relaxed, the kind of spot where people know each other by name and the staff are always around, ready to help day or night. Residents get support that fits what they need, whether that means independent living for folks who like to do things on their own, memory care for people with confusion or wandering, or more hands-on help with things like bathing, dressing, or moving around if someone can't walk well. You'll find wheelchair access, non-ambulatory care, and caregivers who speak English, and there's a real focus on keeping everyone secure, with smoke detectors in each room, alarmed doors, and an emergency call system that gets a staff member's attention if needed.

People who come here usually get their own private room with a private bath, and everything's furnished simply and comfortably, with options if you want a shared room, and chores like laundry and cleaning are handled by staff so daily routines are easier. Home-cooked meals are a big part of life, and they serve food in a central dining room, always paying attention to allergies or diabetes and changing up the menu so there's something for everyone, with snacks made fresh just like the meals. The community features living rooms to gather in, gardens and walking paths to sit out or stroll, an arts room for hobbies, scheduled activities like movie nights, and even a beauty salon or barber shop, so nobody needs to leave for a haircut if they don't want to, plus there are activities both onsite and out in town to keep things lively and social, along with rides provided when someone needs to go to an appointment or off-site outing.

Transportation is available, parking is on site for those who drive, and moving in feels less stressful because the staff help new residents with the transition, even helping coordinate medical record transfers, downsizing tips, or tracking down financial aid options. Registered medication aides make sure each person takes medicine the right way, and health services can include things like help with incontinence, medication, and care for those who need hospice or are getting more frail. There's Wi-Fi, phones in the rooms, cable TV, and the staff are careful to give everyone a schedule that fits their routine, so people keep their independence as much as possible, even as they take part in scheduled community events, family gatherings, or spiritual devotions if they wish. The place's run by American Retirement Homes, Inc., which has over 56 years of senior care experience, and it's licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services, so rules and safety get taken very seriously, while the community itself keeps a low-key, welcoming atmosphere where families and residents stay closely connected and support each other. Essex House aims to offer both short- and long-term stays, with help always close by, and they try to help residents keep doing the things they love, whether that's gardening, art, social activities, or just relaxing in one of the many common rooms or outside under the trees.
