    Friendly staff but dirty facility

I found the staff overwhelmingly friendly, caring and helpful, with lots of activities, a convenient location and affordable pricing. At the same time the building felt dated and often dirty - stained carpets, dingy halls, unpleasant smells, and a history of pests with spotty housekeeping. I rarely saw nurses, noticed medication/safety concerns and inconsistent management/front-desk behavior. New ownership and upgrades are happening, and many residents seemed happy, but I wouldn't place a vulnerable loved one here without touring and verifying cleanliness and clinical care.

    About Maplewood Gardens

Maplewood Gardens sits in the historic Gonzaga district near the Spokane River and the Centennial Trail, and the place has a big, park-like setting with plenty of green space and well-kept patios where people can enjoy being outside, and you'll find lots of places inside to relax too, with lounges, a media room, a library, recreation rooms, a beauty salon, and cozy apartment choices in studio, alcove, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom layouts, with some offering balconies; so there's plenty of room whether you're looking for more privacy or hoping to make friends down the hall, though the building itself is a large three-story place with 208 apartments and a total of 220 beds, which makes it one of the bigger senior communities in Spokane, ranked at 32nd with a rating of 6.9 out of 10. People can choose from independent living, assisted living, memory care, hospice, or respite services here, and they welcome both private pay and Medicaid, which makes things a bit easier for families trying to budget. Staff are on-site all day, every day, with licensed nursing care available for eight hours each day, and all the team members get described as friendly, helpful, and caring toward the residents, so folks don't have to worry about being left on their own if they need help with anything, and the place offers things like medication management, incontinence care, diabetic support, dressing, bathing, and grooming help, as well as escorts to dining or medical appointments when needed. You'll also find physical therapy on-site, plus mobile dental care, audiology visits, mobile labs, and X-rays coming to you, so there's not always a need for big trips to medical offices. Maplewood Gardens makes sure people can enjoy three home-cooked meals every day, including an evening salad bar, and there's special attention to diet needs, so folks with diabetes or other dietary needs don't have to worry. Fresh linens, weekly housekeeping, laundry service, and transportation for medical appointments are part of the routine, and emergency alert systems are in place for everyone's safety. There's a full calendar of activities, including volunteer events, outings, and programs that connect residents with Gonzaga University students, plus opportunities to stay active through wellness and fitness programs, gardening, or just relaxing outdoors. The memory care part is designed so it helps people avoid confusion and wandering, and there's extra care for those living with Alzheimer's and other dementias, while the community's whole design focuses on helping people be as independent as possible but still safe and comfortable. Pet-friendly policies let residents keep a companion nearby, and there's a strong feeling of privacy in the apartments, though neighbors get to know each other easily through shared meals or community events. Maplewood Gardens is part of the CarePartners Senior Living network, so families might find extra resources for caregiving support and planning as needs change over time, with everything from a glossary of terms to advance care planning help, all aimed at making things a little less confusing when it comes time to choose what level of care is right for someone. The place has earned some recognition through Best of Senior Living awards, which adds a little extra comfort when choosing a spot that tries to balance friendliness, safety, and personal dignity throughout different stages of aging.
