    Warm staff but building unsafe

I'm a long-term resident: the staff are warm, caring and the place is affordable with many promised amenities, but the building is poorly maintained, activities and care services often aren't provided, security is lax (drug use and turnover are issues), and it isn't the 55+ community advertised.

    About Luther Haven

Luther Haven Retirement Community sits at 8949 North 97th Street in Milwaukee, WI, and offers a wide range of services for seniors who want to stay active but may need help as their needs change, so you've got independent living, assisted living, home care, skilled nursing, and even memory care for folks with dementia or Alzheimer's right there on one campus, and people often like that you can move through different care levels without leaving the community as things change, plus there are VA benefits if you need help paying for long-term care, including Aid and Attendance benefits which is nice for veterans. The rooms in Luther Haven include studio layouts for people who want something cozy, and there's also 1-bedroom and shared 2-bedroom options for assisted living, along with wheelchair accessible showers and full tubs in the bathrooms to make things easier, which helps when moving around isn't so easy anymore. The community works to keep things comfortable with a commons area, indoor and outdoor spaces for socializing, and a business room for people who still handle a bit of paperwork. There's a strong Lutheran connection in the community, so you'll find activities with local Lutheran churches and onsite devotional services, but also options for offsite worship if someone wants that. You'll notice there are gardening features, a woodshop where many of the men spend their time, and a library that's often busy, plus the walking paths are popular when the weather's good. For health and fitness, there's a fitness room, exercise classes, and a spa/sauna/wellness room, and you've got access to a swimming pool or hot tub, which helps with aches and pains.

The dining situation is simple, you get one meal each day included in your fees-meals are prepared by chefs who focus on balanced diets, but you're close enough to other dining spots if you want a change or more options, and the dining setting is set up for a social meal if you want. Residents can take part in all sorts of activities-movie nights, music programs, scheduled daily events, a game room, outings, and entertainment, plus local buslines stop nearby if you want to get out, and community transportation gets you to appointments or shopping, though some rides might carry extra costs. There's a pet-friendly policy for cats and dogs if they're under a certain weight, and outdoor smoking is allowed but never indoors.

The care staff includes nurses, a doctor on call, and specialists like podiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, and speech therapists who visit as needed, with staff available 24 hours a day for help or emergencies, and a 24-hour call system in every room. Basic nursing services run 12 to 16 hours a day, and there's standby help for transferring if you can't get up on your own, but heavy care isn't provided, meaning folks need to manage incontinence and diabetes mostly on their own, so people who need full-time medical attention might not find it here. Memory care, home care, and hospice services are all onsite, so people can age in place and stay in familiar surroundings. There are residential care homes for seniors who need live-in care and non-medical home care for those still living in their own place.

People like that Luther Haven supports an active lifestyle with plenty of activities and community-sponsored events, social programs, and a commons area where you always find someone to talk to, and there's strong focus on maintaining independence and quality of life even as your needs change, so much of what's here is set up to let folks live comfortably, safely, and as independently as possible for as long as they can.
