      Poor care, isolation, inconsistent meals

I placed my father in this clean, beautiful home with a nice patio and a large private room. Staff were friendly when family was around but harsh or clueless on weekends and when no family was present; there was even an elder-abuse allegation. Visiting hours were abruptly cut (used to be 8am-8pm, now 1-5pm), residents seemed isolated and depressed, and activities/puzzles were removed. Meals were inconsistent - frozen dinners or Totino's-style pizza at times - and communication about illnesses and care was poor; staff couldn't safely lift him, delayed medical attention required an ambulance, and he eventually needed hospice. Fees changed unpredictably without notice and I saw license/rule concerns. He improved after I moved him to a full nursing facility, so I cannot recommend this place.

      About Summerplace

Summerplace sits in northeast Portland, inside a 55+ community with a quiet and active feel, and what you'll notice first are the many places to walk, listen to birds, or just sit by a water fountain out back in a well-kept yard, which is nice if you like a bit of calm now and then. The homes, like the single-level Cambridge model, have big vaulted ceilings and big windows that bring in lots of natural light, wide-open living rooms with a gas fireplace, and a kitchen that's roomy, with stainless steel appliances, an island, and even a built-in desk for recipes or letters. Each house comes with two bedrooms, including a primary suite with a private bathroom and walk-in closet, and there's often a laundry room with a sink, a two-car garage with built-in storage, and even a pull-down attic ladder for keeping things out of the way. Outside, many homes have a covered patio for sitting out when it's nice, a tool shed for gardening, and some backyards have partial fencing for a bit of privacy, with a custom trellis and stonework out front for a bit of charm, and the whole neighborhood sits on about 135 acres with homes, condos, and townhomes, surrounded by garden beds and trees.

The Summerplace Community Clubhouse, which you'll find on NE 150th, anchors the neighborhood and gives residents space for gatherings, games, and social events, and they offer things like a ballroom, meeting rooms, a game room, a fitness center, hot tubs, a pool, a library, and tennis and pickleball courts for staying active or just having fun with others who live nearby. There's a nine-hole golf course inside Summerplace and the Glendoveer 18-hole course close by, which is useful if you like to golf, and there are storage lots for RVs or extra vehicles that you can rent if you need, and walking trails wind through the area if you want a stroll after dinner. Residents get together for coffee hours, fitness classes, book groups, and other activities you'll see on the event calendar, plus special events and chapter meetings for groups in Portland, Houston, and San Diego. The place has a blog, a newsletter, a photo contest, and a summerplaceXchange bulletin board for sharing news or photos, plus board meetings and committees for those who want to be involved.

If you need extra help, Summerplace provides some health and support services with staff offering help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and medication, as well as 24-hour call support, and there are options for assisted living, memory care, or continuing care. The clubhouse is a hub for social gatherings, meals, or classes and it also holds a celebration of life event space, which can mean a lot to longtime residents and their families. Dining options vary from regular dining rooms to chef-prepared meals with allergy-sensitive options, and homes have features like private bathrooms, cable TV, kitchenettes, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and telephone access.

The community feels safe and well-managed with resources like a resident login portal, email lists, tech tips, and an on-site HOA office with regular hours during the week. Office staff support residents with things like housekeeping, move-in coordination, laundry services, and transportation to local appointments or shops, plus a greenhouse for folks who want to keep their hands in the dirt. People get to know each other, and a sense of neighborly routine emerges with fitness programs, board games, or simple everyday conversation at the clubhouse or out on one of the walking paths. The area stays quiet but lively, with most homes on or near the greenway so you can watch the sun set over the trees. Built in 1991, homes tend to have energy features like aluminum-framed, double-pane windows and composition roofs, and the community offers choices for different home sizes from 820 square feet up to more than 1,700, fitting folks who want a small condo or a larger house.

Summerplace fits people looking for a balanced retirement community with activities, health services, and friendly neighbors, sitting between 148th and 162nd Avenue north of Halsey and south of the highway, which gives decent access to city shops and services while keeping the feeling of a close and comfortable place to live.
