    Charming house, concerning dementia care

I toured this newly remodeled, very clean six-resident private home - charming, home-like with a shaded porch, fenced yard and private rooms - and I liked the look. However, staff presence was minimal, there were almost no activities (no cable, limited visiting/chat), and it felt too low-stimulation for someone with memory needs. The owner lives next door and seemed very talkative and money-focused; pricing was open-ended ($3k-$4k+/mo), I encountered extra-money demands and daily calls, and I was warned about evictions and poor dementia-care practices. Overall: lovely house but not a fit for my mom.

    About Verdant Grove

Verdant Grove Adult Family Home sits at 9644 54th Ave S in Seattle, offering care in a real home that keeps things quiet and personal with just six residents across five bedrooms and three full baths, and folks do like that the setting feels warm and relaxed, especially for people managing memory loss, dementia, mental health needs, or disabilities, and the house is all on one level with wheelchair access, walk-in showers, a private patio, and gardens with fruit trees, which makes it easy for wheelchairs and walkers to get around, and folks can step onto the patio for some fresh air or pick a bit of fruit when it's in season. The place stays secure with locked, fenced areas, a wander alert system, and even bracelets for folks who might try exiting-useful for somebody who's at risk of wandering, since the memory care area has its own building set apart for privacy and safety, and staff who stick around 24 hours a day, staying awake so help's always close, or to remind people and assist them with things like getting dressed, bathing, managing medication, or even using a mechanical lift if needed for safe transfers. The home's licensed (#751083), verified, and part of the MyAFH network, with a doctor, RN, dentist, pharmacy, and rehab therapies all ready for scheduling or coordination, and the meals are known for taste and nutrition, with kosher and vegetarian options, snacks, and even special diets if required by the doctor, and if there's a birthday or holiday, staff usually have a celebration, along with regular events like exercise, music, bingo, cooking, games, and craft classes-sometimes even travel outings or movie nights, since there's transportation for offsite activities as well as rides to appointments.

There's Wi-Fi, resident parking for those who drive, television with cable or satellite, newspapers, a library, and a private room for activities or visits, plus beauty, barber, hair, and manicure services that come right to the house, and folks can bring a pet if it follows a few rules, or just enjoy pet visitors now and then, and some folks appreciate the devotional services offered both inside and outside the house for spiritual needs. Staff give diabetic care, wound care, and behavioral support, and they're trained to help adults with major behavior issues if needed, so some residents are living with more complex needs but everyone still gets the kind of help that lets them age in place without a major move if care changes. The care plans fit each person, from simple independent living for folks who just want meals, company, and things handled, up through full nursing care with help for most daily tasks and reminders or hands-on support as memory health changes, and hospice and respite are here for short stays too. Laundry, cleaning, medication help, pharmacy delivery, support for hearing or sight problems, and all meals are included, so most daily needs are covered-and for families, tours are welcome almost all day (8am to 10pm). The place is close to a hospital, the team's won awards for meals and activities, and the neighborhood in King County feels like a calm place to live-especially for those who need the security of a smaller, tight-knit home with real people looking out for them.
