Princeton Place AFH sits quietly at the end of a bluff in Spokane, Washington, with plenty of sunlight coming through a southern picture window and a view of the river, so there's a peaceful, homelike setting that makes it feel cozy and comfortable. The facility is small, licensed for only four residents, and offers private and shared rooms that are simple but well maintained, and there's always a sense of family because the owner and house manager has over twenty-seven years of nursing experience and lives onsite, providing 24-hour care and oversight, which helps everyone feel safe and secure. People who move here often need support for things like dementia, mental illness, or developmental disabilities, and the place is set up with memory care features, including alarm bracelets and a secure area for residents who wander, and the staff can handle residents with major behavior challenges, including those who might act out physically. Safety and accessibility really matter, too, so the building has wheelchair accessible showers, roll-in and whirlpool tubs, and a bathroom that's designed for people who use wheelchairs, and there are indoor and outdoor common spaces like a book room, a movie area, gardens, sidewalks for walking, plus a jacuzzi, sauna, and a fitness room to help people stay active if they're able. Meals are home-cooked every day, and they'll make kosher or vegetarian options for those who want it, and they can help manage diabetes and high blood pressure by changing meals as needed, so people get food that matches their health needs. The house uses the Eden Project idea, bringing in small animals, plants, and sometimes children to make the place feel alive and a bit more like home, and they'll even allow small dogs for residents who want a pet. Staff offers help with all daily activities like bathing, dressing, and medications, with registered nurses, therapists-like physical, occupational, and speech therapy-and a doctor or dentist available if something comes up. They know how to help with difficult tasks, from insulin shots and incontinence to full mechanical lift transfers if someone can't move on their own anymore, and their care lets people stay at Princeton Place as their needs grow, including aging in place, so no one's forced to move if health declines. There are housekeeping and laundry services, regular beauty and barber options, plus spa features like a hairdresser, which keeps everyone feeling neat and cared for. For fun and engagement, Princeton Place plans daily programs-things like music therapy, animal visits, art activities, games, puzzles, movies, and both indoor and outdoor social events, plus special outings and offsite trips. They let residents take part in fitness schedules and evening community gatherings, and there are devotional services for anyone seeking spiritual support. Transportation gets coordinated for doctor's visits, shopping, or even faith-based services, and visitor hours run from 9:00am to 8:00pm, so friends and family can stop by. The facility welcomes both men and women, with options to live in a women-only setting if needed, and everything is organized to help each person feel comfortable and supported as they age, whatever their care needs may be. It's in a quiet residential neighborhood right next to Riverside State Park's Bowl and Pitcher area, just about a mile from the VA Medical Center and not too far from hospitals and Spokane's Arts and Entertainment District, so help and outings aren't far away, and people get to enjoy a peaceful home that's close to nature.
Family atmosphere, but failed care
I chose this place for its family-home feel-pets, kids, and a warm atmosphere-so it was at the top of my list. After my mother caught COVID, was hospitalized, and then died, I felt she wasn't cared for as promised. I do not recommend this facility.
