    Beautiful active but limited care

I found the building beautiful and always very clean, with bright common areas, lots of activities (choir, painting, student volunteers) and friendly, compassionate staff. The buzzed entry feels secure and it's a pleasant, homestyle daycare environment, but it has a small walking area and few nearby shops or restaurants. It wasn't right for my mother - staff were busy, didn't provide dressing/bathing help, and didn't always listen to family, so it's not suitable for higher care needs.

    About Sheltering Arms Residential Care

Sheltering Arms Residential Care sits at 165 McKinley Avenue, Norwich, CT, in a two-story brick building right near the business district, where men and women over 60 years old can find a supervised, home-like place to live if they need some help but still want to keep as much independence as possible. The community has 30 private rooms, a formal living room for family visits, sun porches, shared TVs, and a courtyard for enjoying fresh air, along with a dining room where staff make and serve homestyle meals planned for nutrition and taste. There's always an on-site nurse and staff around 24 hours a day to help with things like bathing, personal care, medication, or just getting a ride to appointments, while scheduled transportation takes folks off-site for community events or errands.

Sheltering Arms offers both assisted living and independent living, as well as adult day care and respite care, so someone doesn't have to move if their needs change over time, and people can come in for short-term stays if family caregivers need a break. Alzheimer's care is available, with caring staff to help those who need memory support. Housekeeping and laundry services help keep things easy for residents, and those who need diabetic, incontinence, or non-ambulatory care can get help right on site. The Ross Adult Day Center serves people who might be homebound or are thinking about nursing home care, offering activities and services during the day for both elderly and disabled adults.

The place feels a lot like a close-knit neighborhood, with enrichment programs, intergenerational activities, offsite events, story sharing, and devotional gatherings for those who want them, and there's a beauty/barber shop, indoor common rooms for hobbies, and emergency call features for safety. Staff help residents stay as independent as possible, with services like pharmacy support, draw stations, and support getting health insurance or care management. Sheltering Arms, as part of UCFS Healthcare, gives residents and the larger community access to a wide range of health centers-like New London, Colchester, Plainfield, Griswold, and The Edward & Mary Lord Family Health Center-which provide pediatric care, adult and geriatric medical care, dental services, gynecology, and many types of behavioral health support including counseling, autism support, and medication-assisted treatment programs.

Many folks appreciate the warm, cozy atmosphere and helpful staff, as well as the ability to choose between different types of living arrangements, participate in planned activities, and know they're supported by dedicated healthcare professionals with high standards. Sheltering Arms Residential Care has served as a genuine place to call home, offering both the comfort of community and real healthcare services under one roof, and their photo gallery and testimonial stories can show a little of what life's like in this Norwich senior community.
