    Beautiful facility, serious safety concerns

I placed my mom here because the facility is beautiful, all on one level with garages, good meals, activities, spa services by appointment, and many staff are friendly and caring. Unfortunately it's chronically short-staffed - slow responses, longer wait times, noisy nights and hardworking aides stretched too thin. That understaffing has led to serious lapses: dirty rooms (even feces left on a toilet), spilled drinks, lost items, equipment/CPAP failures, an almost-dropped transfer and at least one abuse/ICU incident that prompted a state report. Billing and communication were poor - unresponsive offices, threatening letters and promised refunds that never arrived. It's expensive and you may have to move if funds run out; I'd recommend only if the location, appearance and friendly staff outweigh the real safety and management concerns.

About The Gardens of Cedar Rapids

The Gardens of Cedar Rapids offers a mix of independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing care, and skilled rehabilitation services. This locally owned, for-profit community sits on a big, interactive campus and aims to support each resident's individual needs and choices, whether someone wants to be active on their own or needs a good bit of help. There's a focus on promoting independence, with staff trained to help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and medication, and they always keep an eye out to make sure folks are comfortable and safe. Meal service includes chef-inspired dishes served three times a day with all-day options and attention to allergies, diabetes, and other dietary needs, and the facility's kitchen keeps things both tasty and healthy.

Amenities stretch from indoor lounges to outdoor walking paths, activity rooms with arts and crafts, a garden for fresh air, movie nights, a barber and salon, plus the comfort of furnished rooms with telephones, cable TV, Wi-Fi, and utilities included in the monthly rent. For those in assisted living, there's weekly housekeeping, help with personal care, and a 24-hour call system for support. Memory care is specially designed for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias, using secure spaces, open floor plans, an enclosed courtyard, and regular mind-stimulating activities, with emphasis on hydration, medication management, and wellness plans for every resident.

The nursing care side has 40 certified beds, with 8 available as of June 2025, and accepts Medicare. Here, residents get skilled medical attention and rehabilitation, plus support around the clock if needed, and the therapy center has a full-service kitchen to practice daily tasks before heading home. Apartments in the community are spacious, pet-friendly, and handicap accessible, so most needs can get met. Seniors who still want to live at home can get help through home care, where aides provide non-medical care, companionship, and help with chores.

Social life runs pretty steady, with communal and resident-run activities, educational events, and all sorts of group programs that help build friendships and keep folks busy. For those needing a short stay or a break for their usual caregiver, respite care is available. Transportation on certain days and times is offered for appointments or outings, and the property encourages staying active with regular life enrichment and wellness programs. The community partners with local and state groups like the Iowa Center for Home Care, Iowa Health Care Association, and Iowa Center for Assisted Living. Over time, The Gardens of Cedar Rapids has picked up awards for meals, activities, and friendly staff, showing the care here is both well-rounded and welcoming, and staff make a steady effort to keep residents feeling at home, whatever their level of need or stage of life.
