    Caring staff but safety concerns

I had a mixed experience. The building is clean, well-maintained, with good therapy, plenty of activities, and many staff who are warm, attentive, and caring. However, it felt money-focused and understaffed at times - I experienced or saw serious lapses (delayed responses, medication/IV issues, blood left on the floor, slow doctor action) and harsh visitation/couple separation policies. Food and parking are OK but it's expensive and insurance/Medicaid planning is needed. I can't fully recommend without caution - great people, but safety and priorities worried me.

    About Topeka Presbyterian Manor

Topeka Presbyterian Manor sits at 4712 SW 6th Ave in the Prospect Hills neighborhood of Topeka, Kansas, and is a senior living community that's been around for about 75 years, offering housing options like cozy apartment homes, townhomes, single-family homes, and various sizes in tower and garden apartments, with names like The Birch, The Alder, The Willow, The Elm, The Maple, The Juniper, The Aster, The Iris, The Lavender, and The Orchid for independent living, and The Sparrow, The Quail, The Dove, The Starling, The Skylark, The Robin, The Cardinal, The Canary, and The Pheasant for assisted living, many with private kitchenettes, baths, and storage, with memory care for those living with Alzheimer's or dementia, and they let residents bring pets such as small dogs, cats, two birds, or fish, but there's a $500 non-refundable fee for pets, and the campus is generally secure with doors locked at night and regular patrols.

There's an on-site beauty salon and barber shop, devotional services both on and off campus to support spiritual life, and they organize family education programs along with scheduled transportation for outings, so there's some help if one needs to go to appointments or run errands, plus they deliver meals with care for dietary needs, including vegetarian options, and provide snacks through the day. A dedicated care team stays on hand around the clock for help with bathing, dressing, medication, and emergency response, and licensed clinical staff is on site 24 hours, keeping an eye on those needing skilled nursing or support after illness, offering long-term care or short-term rehab if that's needed.

Their full-time activity directors fill up the calendar with social events, educational programs, wellness activities, chapel services, and music or art programs, while community spaces like the rotunda, library, art studio, and a chapel with worship services give everyone a place to gather, and the onsite cappuccino bar, manor shop, and pond with scenic walking paths add to a relaxed feeling, with concerts, speakers, clubs, and wellness programs available too.

They have amenities for comfort like housekeeping, laundry, utility services covered (though which ones isn't clear), resident parking, and indoor and outdoor areas set up for group activities, plus a therapy gym with skilled therapists and emergency systems in each apartment. Accommodations can range from studios to two-bedroom grand apartments, offering space for many needs, but they keep things secure with entry doors locked on certain buildings at night.

Topeka Presbyterian Manor is a not-for-profit, faith-based community that puts value on Christian heritage, and the community works to protect each person's rights, including protections for gender identity, orientation, and source of income, following both federal and Kansas laws against discrimination. The community isn't fancy or pushy, but it does try to make life easier and safer for seniors and their families who want different levels of care, whether that's independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, long-term care, memory care, or short-term rehab, all on the same campus in a place called Ellenwand, which means one doesn't need to move somewhere new if care needs change. They work to give residents a real sense of home, safety, companionship, and support throughout their stay.
