    Beautiful oceanside campus, but pricey

I lived at this oceanfront CCRC for ten years and loved the beautiful, well-kept campus, bright clean rooms, panoramic dining room and top-notch fitness/amenity options. The staff were caring, competent and family-like - they supported me after my husband died and the health center and walk-in clinic were spotless and comprehensive. There are lots of activities, regular shuttles to cultural events, volunteer opportunities and a lively social scene (though weekends can be quiet). It's very popular with a long wait list and high demand. Downsides: pricing is absurdly high for the value, leadership can feel business-focused, turnover and wayfinding are issues, and the lack of on-site memory/dementia care is a serious limitation. Overall a wonderful, well-run oceanside place with superb staff and amenities, but not the best fit if you need affordable or dementia care.

    About Piper Shores

Piper Shores is a nonprofit lifecare retirement community located in Scarborough, Maine, offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing care in a setting with ocean views and well-kept grounds, and folks can choose apartments or cottages-like in Oceanside or The Meadows-with features such as full kitchens, vaulted ceilings, fireplaces, garages, private terraces or decks, lots of sunlight, and plenty of storage, making it feel comfortable and bright, and there's studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom options available, too. Residents pay a 90% refundable entrance fee for independent living homes, and there's a predictable monthly payment, so people know what to expect if their needs change, since the lifecare model provides priority access to onsite services at Holbrook, which includes respite care, short-term rehabilitation, long-term nursing care, memory care at Wayland House, and assisted living care. The PersonFirst® approach and a holistic, person-centered care model mean staff encourage residents to help guide their own care, and personalized assistance's available as people need it, with specialized memory care for Alzheimer's and other needs, and facilities are set up to keep people safe, comfortable, and as independent as possible.

On the grounds, you'll see gardens, walking paths, benches, and picnic areas, plus an oceanfront lawn for bocce and places to enjoy scenic views of Casco Bay, while folks can fish, bike, join in bridge games, or take part in the Bigelow Art Center, resident art shows, or even woodworking, gardening, yoga, and wellness programs, and the calendar fills up with activities for anyone looking to stay busy. An indoor pool with easy entry offers gentle exercise, and the fitness center and spa, hair salon, campus-wide WiFi, bank, art center, and handy transportation to Portland hospitals, supermarkets, the University of New England, and local outings make day-to-day living simpler and less of a hassle. Dining rooms overlook Casco Bay, with a culinary externship program approved by the Culinary Institute of America, and there's always something to do or find, with the library, community garden, and seating areas open to residents.

The community's been recognized as one of the best places to retire in Maine and is the state's only lifecare retirement community that's nonprofit and accredited by CARF/CCAC, offering security and quality for its residents. Holbrook Health Center onsite has skilled nursing for both short-term rehab and long-term care, assisted living with compassionate help for everyday tasks, memory care in a secure space that values each person's dignity, and predictable costs for both current and changing needs. The new assisted living and memory care expansion's open to lifecare residents and some others, adding more care options, and complimentary tours let interested folks see the facilities up close. Residents can move between levels of care as needed, and the combination of amenities, activities, and natural beauty along Maine's coastline makes Piper Shores a unique place for retirement living, with services designed to promote well-being, dignity, and an active lifestyle for older adults.
