    Great location, caring staff, costly

I moved into this Towson community and love the beautiful, well-maintained campus, renovated pool, nice apartments, and terrific activities - bridge, concerts, trips and lots of social options keep me busy. The staff are warm, caring, and attentive (they know residents' names and often go the extra mile), which gives my family peace of mind. Downsides: monthly costs are high and some rooms are small; I've had slow front-desk service, frustrating transfers between departments and inconsistent care in the dependent living area. Food has been excellent at times and later disappointing other times, and COVID visitation was restrictive. Overall, great location, amenities, and people - just be aware of price and occasional service lapses.

    About Blakehurst

Blakehurst is a Life Plan Community where physicians and internal medicine practitioners help run things, and staff provide skilled care day and night with nurses always there, which gives the place a steady, reliable feel if anyone starts worrying. Residents can pick from independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, adult day care, and home health care, all on one campus, so neighbors often stay put even if their needs change. Messiah Village is what they call the residential area, and it has private apartments that have walk-in closets, private bathrooms, patios or balconies, and sometimes washer and dryers, with options for renovations that make them spacious and more open, and some units even have cable TV and emergency call systems built in just in case. When it comes to eating, rehabilitation dining services and daily meal service help make meals easier, and food is always part of daily life, though the options vary, and there's a focus on letting people enjoy it in a social setting or alone if they prefer. There's a full-time activities director who plans a lot of daily things to do, like social outings, walking on paths, using elevators, playing on the putting green or croquet course, or spending time in the residents' lounge or movie theater, and the swimming pool stays heated which makes it easier on joints, especially for folks who like a gentle exercise, and you see groups doing water aerobics or just floating along with friends. Wellness programs include cardiovascular exercise, aerobic fitness, and HealthyLife™ Services, which puts a lot of focus on arts, culture, and staying active if you feel up to it, and there are programs for joint protection, safety and fall prevention, balance and functional mobility, and wound management therapy, plus energy conservation and how to adjust to new routines as things change with age, and blood health services for people who need more medical care. There's a big focus on rehabilitation, with therapy services at the on-site health center and also at local hospitals or other senior communities, with both short- and long-term nursing care available for folks who suddenly need extra help. Staff make sure medication, occupational, physical, speech, and even pet therapy are part of daily life for those who want or need them, and restraint reduction matters here, so people stay comfortable. Memory care handles Alzheimer's and dementia, with special programs and secure areas for those who may wander, and psychiatrists and psychoanalysts give support for mental health too. For people who need it, there's emergency call systems, transportation, laundry, and housekeeping, so chores get handled, and covered parking, elevators, and a library for quiet afternoons. Some apartments have balconies for sitting outside, and guests can stay in set-aside guest facilities, which makes visits easier. Financial planning, elder law, estate and real estate legal help, and special needs planning services are available, which can help with confusing paperwork, and entrance fees for independent living start around $230,000, with monthly fees beginning at $5,271, so it's important for families to think ahead about budgets. Overall, Blakehurst lets residents have a mix of help with daily life or independence, with medical, wellness, legal, social, and leisure support under one roof, and while the place is large and full of services, residents get to decide how much to use, and the community staff are always present if anything changes or someone needs extra care.
