    Warm community, serious safety concerns

I visited and lived here - I found a warm, mission-driven community with wonderful activities, terrific food, lovely grounds, and a true continuum of care (rehab and memory units impressively staffed and compassionate). I saw residents who were engaged, happy, and treated with dignity, and staff who were often professional, welcoming, and attentive. I also encountered serious red flags: extreme understaffing at times, instances of neglect (falls, missed care, long alarm waits of several minutes), delayed ambulance response, poor handling of complaints, and spotty maintenance. The facility is mostly clean and social, but living spaces can be small and upkeep inconsistent. I would recommend touring and asking pointed questions about current staffing ratios and incident response before deciding.

    About Heritage Community of Kalamazoo

Heritage Community of Kalamazoo has served seniors in Kalamazoo for over 74 years, standing as the area's oldest and largest nonprofit senior care organization since 1945, and you'll find it right in one of Kalamazoo's historic neighborhoods, not far from downtown. The community looks after more than 400 residents and offers many choices, including independent living, assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's or dementia, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and in-home care, so a person can get support and still feel at home as their needs change with time. Seven locations make up the campus: Wyndham Apartments, Directors Hall, Wyndham West, Amber Way, Amber Place, and Upjohn Care and Rehabilitation Center, with Meilland Square and Hawthorn Landing featuring assisted living and specialized memory care.

The staff includes trained nurses and caregivers who treat people kindly and take time to build good relationships with each person. They focus on trust, patience, and keeping everyone's dignity, and they're known for their warm attitudes. Care plans are personalized after an initial assessment, covering things like physical therapy, medication help, wound care, bathing, dressing, or even more involved dementia care if needed, while keeping family in the loop and supporting them too, thanks in part to a Memory Care Learning Center that offers resources and training. The homecare service is licensed and operates at 2300 Portage St.

Safety matters here, so you'll find security features like sprinkler systems, maintained property, and 24-hour professional nursing care, along with laundry, dry cleaning, housekeeping, and personal care services to help with daily life. Assisted living apartments come in studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts, all including amenities like kitchens or kitchenettes and safety features for those who need them. Residents also get cable TV, wifi, guest parking, and pet-friendly areas, so pets can come along too.

The campus feels lively, with areas for games and social activities, a salon and barbershop, fitness rooms, walking trails, and nearby boutiques or restaurants. A dedicated chef and nutrition team plan and prepare meals, with both modern and classic dining options and a dining room for shared meals. Residents stay active with arts and crafts, health and wellness programs, educational sessions, group exercise, and scheduled outings using transportation provided by the facility, plus access to physical, speech, and occupational therapy if needed.

Heritage Community also recognizes that sometimes people need a break or a short stay, so respite and hospice care are available, and there's a Volunteer Coordinator named Ashley McDowell to help get people engaged in volunteer programs that support both residents and the wider community. The leadership team includes a Chief Operating Officer and a President and CEO, with a volunteer board guiding the community's mission to celebrate each person and connect with families in meaningful ways. Heritage Community of Kalamazoo welcomes both independent and assisted living residents, provides nursing home services with private and semi-private rooms, and strives to create a sense of purpose and community for older adults in a safe, caring, and locally-rooted environment.
