    Pleasant facility, poor care oversight

I liked the private, modern rooms (non-carpeted, freshly painted, bay windows), the friendly/helpful staff, affordable rates, activities/church services, laundry and elevator access - the place is clean and pleasant in appearance. But staffing is thin and inconsistent: med-tech training and shift communication are poor, hand hygiene is lacking, bathing and nail care are infrequent, special diets aren't followed, personal items get lost or damaged, and dementia residents are handled insensitively. Management feels disengaged and the memory-care quality and meals worry me. Overall I'm not impressed and wouldn't recommend it until staffing and oversight improve.

About Fountainview Retirement Village of Portage

Fountainview Retirement Village of Portage is a nonprofit assisted living and memory care community run by Baruch Senior Ministries in a quiet part of Portage, Michigan, near W Centre Ave, not far from St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and Portage Creek Bicentennial Park, so you get a peaceful setting surrounded by woods with a nice porch for enjoying the outdoors, and inside, residents can choose suite-style rooms and take part in community activities like movie nights, social gatherings, arts rooms, and resident-run events that help everyone feel included and give folks a chance to make friends, which is always important as you get older, and when it comes to care, the staff supports residents with things like grooming, bathing, dressing, eating, transfers, help to the bathroom, and mobility, with medication help and a 24-hour call system so someone's always there if you need them, and staff assist with laundry, cleaning, and even dry cleaning to keep things fresh and clean at all times, and for meals, cooks prepare three nutritious meals a day with snacks and special diets for things like allergies or diabetes, and there are religious services and spiritual support, too, which is good for the soul, and residents can go to the in-house beauty shop or join in game nights, family activities, or stroll the walking paths and gardens around the place, and for those who need it, memory care comes with secure doors, staff trained in dementia care, a structured calendar of activities to keep minds active, and custom plans for each person, and the care team works with outside agencies like home health, hospice, and physical therapy to make sure every need's covered, plus there's respite care for short stays if someone's recovering or if caregivers need a rest, and families appreciate the quiet neighborhood feel and how the focus stays on comfort, community, and keeping everything clean, safe, and respectful, with suite-style rooms, move-in help, and community amenities like telephones, transportation, parking, 24-hour supervision, emergency alert systems, and activities that invite folks to stay active, involved, and well-cared for, so it's a place that doesn't feel rushed or showy, just honest about the care it gives and the sense of belonging it tries to create for everyone who lives there.
