    Lovely campus, dangerous medical neglect

I moved my mother into this beautiful, faith-based campus because of the food, activities, and welcoming staff, and the rehab/therapy was decent. Sadly, chronic understaffing, poor communication, and mismanagement led to serious medical neglect - missed blood sugars and meds, hygiene lapses, left unsupervised (multiple falls), stage-4 bedsores, a broken femur and eventual hospice death. Safety sensors and alternative measures were ineffective, doctor visits were limited, meds were delayed, paperwork was lost, and complaints to nursing management did little. Staff at times were caring and the campus is lovely with great meals and activities, but the big buy-in, high cost, and inconsistent clinical care mean you need a persistent family advocate. I can't recommend it unless you can closely oversee care.

    About Bishop Spencer Place

Bishop Spencer Place sits near the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, only two blocks west of Saint Luke's Hospital on 43rd Street, and you'll find it offers a vibrant and independent lifestyle for active seniors, with private apartment homes that residents can make feel like home by bringing in their own furniture and decorations, which really helps with comfort. This is a non-profit, smoke-free continuing care community connected to Saint Luke's Health System, so they've got a wide range of healthcare services, including skilled nursing, assisted living, memory care, and even palliative and hospice care, plus specific help for non-ambulatory needs, diabetes, pain management, incontinence, and more, all available on the campus. Bishop Spencer Place also has short-term rehabilitation services at York Place Skilled Nursing and Rehab, with homelike spaces for both rehab and long-term care, and the staff-to-resident ratios usually beat both Missouri and Kansas averages, which means there's often more help around when you need it, and the staff has a reputation for being compassionate and dedicated. Health offerings go beyond the basics-they have swallow therapy, fall reduction and balance retraining programs, cardiac rehab, stroke and brain injury care, orthopedic therapy for things like hip, knee, and back fractures, as well as physical, speech, and occupational therapy for people coming in for short stays or who just need to recover.

You'll notice Bishop Spencer Place has a pet-friendly campus, so residents can bring their animals with them, and in addition to care levels ranging from independent living to respite care and home care, they offer private caregiving services too, letting people stay in their own apartments while getting the extra help they need. There's also year-round activities for residents, game nights, musical performances, theater events, and a packed calendar full of offsite excursions, on-site devotional opportunities, exhibit previews, and lectures so there's always something to do or see if you're interested. The dining program here comes from PB&J Restaurants' culinary services, offering five-star meals, and all residents have their utilities, security, dining, transportation, housekeeping, and concierge services included in the regular monthly service fee, which makes day-to-day things simpler. The building has common areas indoors and out, designed for comfort, and there's a true sense of community since engagement and enrichment programs run throughout the week. For families looking into care, it's good to know Bishop Spencer Place handles all levels of senior living care in one place, even including home health care and hospice house services on-site, so people don't need to move if their care needs change. Overall, Bishop Spencer Place stands out for its honest approach to care, flexible services, strong health system partnership, and wide range of programs and amenities that make life a little easier and more engaging for residents.
