    Active community but shows racism

I live here and am impressed - the Activities/Life Engagement team keeps us busy with boat cruises, karaoke, museum trips, exercise classes, painting groups, concerts and many committees. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and professional; dining is phenomenal with plentiful, tasty (and vegetarian) options, and medical care is prompt (on-site docs, quick x-rays, nearby imaging). The campus is bright, clean and well-maintained with pool, fitness, putting green, gardens, roomy private rooms/cottages and a true continuum of care - it's active and social, but expensive (~$6,000/mo). One serious caveat: I have observed racism and an unwelcoming attitude toward people of color, which marred an otherwise excellent community.

    About Kendal at Ithaca

Kendal at Ithaca sits on a 105-acre campus in the Finger Lakes region, giving residents lots of green space and well-kept walking trails, plus gardens and gazebos where you can just sit and enjoy some peace, and the interior has cozy lounges with fireplaces and comfortable seating where folks get together and socialize or just relax. The community's been there since 1995 as a nonprofit and has lots of options including independent living, enhanced assisted living, short-term rehabilitation, and long-term nursing care, with rooms and apartments in several sizes, like studio units, one-bedroom, one-bedroom with a den, two-bedroom, and two-bedroom with a den, and there are private rooms with private bathrooms and individual climate controls for comfort, and people can decorate their spaces with their own things from home so it feels personal. There's a skilled and full-time staff, including finance assistants, unit secretaries, human resources directors, activities assistants, and professionals in nursing and rehabilitation-every one focused on creating a supportive and caring environment, which goes for residents and staff both, and they make sure to help with daily activities for those who need it. Kendal at Ithaca works with a continuing care retirement community program and carries CARF accreditation, with long-term and dementia care specialty programs that meet high quality standards, which they've kept up since first getting accredited in 2003. The place offers a range of health care services, including supervision, rehab, medical help, and prevention focused on wellness, and there's always some kind of activity happening-movie screenings, discussion groups, concerts, parties, and hobbies like winemaking, art exhibits, jigsaw puzzles, and much more, with access to a TV studio, a woodshop, an activities center, clay tennis courts, a dog park, and bird aviaries. Residents can enjoy three meals daily, prepared by a culinary team, and there's walking access to retail, as well as public transportation nearby, which lets people keep connected to the things they like to do outside the campus. The community works to involve residents and families in decisions and keeps a non-institutional, warm atmosphere with unrestricted visiting hours, so people can really feel at home. Lively social spaces, both inside and out, plus all those structured programs and services, help residents maintain a high quality of life, and, being so close to Cornell University and Ithaca College, you also find some educational and cultural activities around, if that's something you like. The staff number between 201 and 500, so there's always help, and the system of services is coordinated to make things run smoother for everyone living there.
