    Beautiful campus, inconsistent care, caution

I toured and lived briefly at this upscale, very clean campus and was impressed by the amenities - movie theater, ice cream bar/cafe, gym, salon, library, varied dining, patio homes and lots of activities - and the convenient Main-Street/shopping location. Staff were often friendly, caring and professional, and rehab/therapy care and physical-therapy facilities were excellent. However I also experienced serious inconsistencies: understaffing, poor communication, missed medications and meals, rude or absent nurses at times, and management that was unresponsive - problems that led to infections and lost confidence for some residents. Overall it feels like a beautiful, activity-filled community with great amenities, but I would caution anyone to ask hard questions about staffing, medication protocols and nursing oversight before committing.

    About Chesterwood Village

Chesterwood Village sits within Hillandale Communities and offers several living options for people over 55, including independent living in lakefront cottages, assisted living in apartments, and a secured memory care wing for residents with Alzheimer's and dementia, so you'll see people coming and going for all sorts of reasons, whether it's to go to the movie room, take a walk on the garden paths, or join a group for chair volleyball or bingo. The place covers just about every kind of care, from light daily help with things like bathing and dressing, all the way up to skilled nursing, diabetes support, rehabilitation, and specialized therapies for things like Parkinson's, and you'll find nurses on staff, a doctor on call, visiting nurses and therapists, and a 24-hour call system with awake staff, which comes in handy in an emergency.

The memory care area sits in its own building, and it's secured with alarms, bracelets, and coded entries, which is good for those who tend to wander, and you'll see rooms and common areas set up with yesteryear themes and private suites, so folks feel calmer and less confused. Everybody can enjoy brunches, grill-outs, live music, movie nights, worship services, and themed parties, and pets like cats or dogs are welcome. The Main Street section has places to eat, worship, get a haircut, and enjoy ice cream, and there's a therapy and wellness center with workout equipment, a pool for aquatic therapy, and plenty of options like Tai Chi, yoga, and balance training, so those who need or want something to do can always find an activity, whether it's baking, gardening, or even a visit from the Cincinnati Reds mascot.

Rates start at about $3,670 for a studio apartment and $4,780 for a one-bedroom, with community and respite fees, and extra fees for higher levels of care or a second person. Chesterwood Village provides chef-prepared meals, and they accommodate allergies and special diets, so nobody's left out, and they take care of housekeeping, laundry, transportation for events or doctor's visits, and even have a full-time activity director who plans activities for different levels of ability. There's Wi-Fi throughout, wheelchair-accessible showers, tubs, and plenty of places to sit inside and out, plus a clubhouse, beauty salon, movie room, game rooms, and an on-site doctor's office. Folks can come for short-term rehab after surgery or illness, spend time for respite care, or move in for the long run, with a system that lets them age in place as their needs change. The place is smoke-free and has rules against wandering, and it can handle residents with behavior issues or special care needs as long as they're able to participate in their own incontinence management.

The village runs an outpatient mental health clinic and offers advanced therapy equipment, from the CyberCycle for virtual biking to the MOTOmed Muvi for arm and leg training, and features a big therapy pool and rooms that let residents safely practice tasks like cooking or laundry. Staff offer help with everything from medication reminders to IV care, pain management, wound care, and even complex behavioral symptoms, alongside usual social and fitness programs. Residents get options for independent, assisted, or memory care living, and the property is close to bus lines, with both complimentary and paid transportation options, parking, and concierge services available. Special features include the Well Life Program for wellness screenings and health classes and a focus on community life with lots of chances to meet others and stay engaged as part of daily living. Chesterwood Village does what it can to make things comfortable and manageable, with friendly staff, and a setting where families can feel involved, knowing there are trained people there around the clock.
