    Beautiful community, declining care, concerns

I toured this beautiful, well-laid-out community and liked the friendly, long-tenured staff, active social calendar (arts, music, bingo, outings), and strong sense of community - multiple dining options and room service, The Grill, salon, library, exercise area, laundry and covered parking, plus Alzheimer's and assisted options. Apartments were clean with large living rooms and good storage, and the staff were informative and responsive on my tour. That said, I have serious reservations: service and care felt like they'd declined, communication was confusing, there are reports of theft/stolen jewelry and unmet promises of care, and the downtown location/smoking policy made it the wrong fit for my loved one.

Park Central Community sits in Amarillo, Texas, and gives seniors many living choices including independent living, assisted living, nursing home care, memory care for Alzheimer's and dementia, home health care, and adult day care. Folks can choose from studio, single-room, or two-bedroom assisted living apartments, each with kitchenettes, safety features, washers and dryers, and cable TV. The independent living apartments come furnished with soft lights and decorative quilts, kitchens with white cabinets, granite counters, and black appliances in several floor plans, and there's regular apartment maintenance offered too. The nursing home has semi-private and private rooms, and provides skilled nursing, wound care, medication help, and a nurse navigator.

Park Central offers health services like occupational therapy, podiatry, physical rehabilitation, diabetic and incontinence care, and help with dressing, walking, bathing, grooming, and toileting. There's a specialized Alzheimer's disease care unit and personalized health plans for memory care residents. The staff - from the nurses and personal care assistants to the resident technology coordinator - are fully trained, accessible, and kind, helping residents maintain independence while staying safe. The Ware Memorial Care Center is a licensed nursing and rehabilitation site on campus that gives ongoing and individualized care.

Dining is available daily in rooms with chandeliers and comfortable seating, and chefs and meal planners focus on healthy, tasty meals, while a separate restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Residents have full access to a fitness center and wellness room with exercise machines, a hair salon and spa, a marketplace, postal services, laundry and dry cleaning, and guest rooms for visitors. The property features a library, arts and crafts rooms, a woodworking and hobby space, a community room with modern lighting, and outside courtyards and gardens with water features, green grass, and statues.

Folks who live here have busy days with scheduled group transportation to stores or activities, a full calendar of events, educational and wellness programs, arts and music therapy, Bible studies, social games, and even special community projects promoted by the Rotary Club of Amarillo. Support services like counseling, pastoral care from an on-staff pastor, memory programs, and long-term care insurance options are all available. Residents with any stage of memory impairment get special care, therapy, and support from staff trained in dementia programs. Park Central also offers caregiving services in partnership with local foundations, and keeps residents engaged with local news, technology, and helpful resources presented through its community website and Facebook page. Housekeeping, scheduled maintenance, and group transportation make daily living easier. The community has guest parking, Wi-Fi throughout, private and common dining rooms, fire sprinkler systems, and amenities such as music, arts, and activities rooms.

Park Central Community houses centers like Harrington Assisted Living, Moore Assisted Living, The Sycamore, and Ware Living Center, each with their own programs and services. Activities bring together independent and assisted living residents, and the "My Park Central Community" program seems to let residents shape their experience. Park Central works with the Mary E. Bivins Foundation and has friendly staff known for being joyful with residents and visitors, while focusing on respectful care and quality of life.
