    Caring community with minor issues

I moved into a remodeled two-bedroom garden cottage in this life-care community six years ago and I'm very glad I did. The staff are overwhelmingly caring, attentive and polite, the grounds are beautiful, meals are good, and activities keep residents active and social. The seamless transition from independent living to assisted care and skilled nursing has given my family real peace of mind - maintenance-free living and convenient location are huge pluses. Minor concerns: maintenance can be slow, I've noticed a smoking smell at times, occasional staff communication/conflict issues, and the med center has some limits (no Alzheimer's unit). Overall I highly recommend it.

    About John Knox Village

John Knox Village sits on a spacious 40-acre site in Weslaco, Texas, and works as a Continuing Care Retirement Community, or CCRC, which means seniors can find different levels of care as their needs change. Folks can choose from independent living options like apartments, townhomes, garden cottages with lush landscaping, and patio homes with garages and outdoor spaces, and there are also newly built townhomes with two bedrooms, two baths, and a separate office or study if that's needed. Apartments come in one or two-bedroom layouts and include laundry and meal services so residents don't have to worry about the basics. For those needing more help, John Knox Village offers assisted living and nursing care, with inpatient nursing and rehabilitative services, a health care center with 24-hour emergency care, and staff who manage medications and daily living activities. The LifeCare Program gives residents access to all these services for one set monthly fee, so there's less worry about changing costs as care needs shift. There are memory care services for people who need special attention because of dementia or memory loss, and staff pay close attention to safety with medical alert systems like ADT Medical Alert and options for ID theft protection, medication dispensers, walk-in tubs, and home security. The community's faith-based, non-profit approach focuses on compassion and support for both elderly and disabled people. There's a long list of amenities like golf courses, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a library, arts and crafts room, health spa, woodworking shop, party room, and a computer lab with internet access, so there's usually something to do or a quiet place to relax. Residents get added services like laundry, housekeeping, transportation, scheduled health screenings, and personal care, plus meals for special diets if the doctor orders them. Social life's busy, with activities and outings to local attractions, and there's a brochure with information and scheduled tours for those wanting to come see for themselves. The place may use some unique terms for its programs, like the LifeCare Program, but overall everything's designed around helping residents live independently and stay engaged as long as possible.
