    Nice amenities, poor clinical care

I toured and lived here; the building, amenities, dining room and many front-line staff are lovely and friendly, and rehab/medical partnerships and location are strong. But management is unprofessional, money-driven, and retaliatory, staffing is short and clinical care inconsistent - meds are slow, food/rooms often cold, and my father lost weight and worsened in their care. High buy-in/continuing-care costs and forced, costly moves to higher levels make it not worth the price. I'd only recommend independent, healthy seniors - avoid for cognitive decline or serious care needs.

    About The Chesapeake

The Chesapeake sits on Harpersville Road in Midtown Newport News, close to City Center, I-64, and Riverside Hospital, so people can get to it easy enough, and it's set up as a faith-based, nonprofit retirement community that covers independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and memory care with cottages. The place has both the Chesapeake Retirement Community and an Assisted Living Facility (ALF) right on the grounds, with 52 beds for assisted living and 73 beds set aside for nursing home care, and there are several levels of help depending on what a person needs, like non-ambulatory care, diabetic care, and incontinence care, plus home health and home care services, and even adult day care. Folks here get personalized care plans and on-site help, with skilled healthcare staff and extra medical support, so people can stay comfortable and safe no matter their circumstance, and there's a whole lot of activities, like water aerobics, yoga and chair yoga, trips offsite, devotional gatherings, and educational speaker days, which aim to keep people busy and social.

The Chesapeake's environment feels peaceful and inviting, with a gazebo surrounded by blooming crepe myrtles, lounge areas with comfy chairs and warm lights, elegant lobby columns, and dining rooms set up with good lighting and nice tables, while the indoor and outdoor common areas include fireplaces, media centers, and a swimming pool. Residents can bring their cats and dogs, and the community has pet-focused programs too, so people don't have to leave their pals behind. Every room's got its own features like bathtubs, wheelchair accessible showers, and window views, and there are amenities like a modern kitchen with white cabinets and stainless appliances for those who like to stay active in their own way. Folks who live here can use transportation services, with both complimentary and paid rides, and there's plenty of resident parking, which makes things easier for everybody. There's also beautician services, special vegetarian meals, and a culinary program, along with wellness services that cover the little comforts and daily needs.

The community offers different programs aimed at the mind, body, and spirit to help people hold onto independence and well-being, and staff make it a focus to nurture everyone's unique needs, following a mission for holistic wellness and support. The on-site business and marketing offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm for any questions, and the place is designed to give residents a safe, comfortable spot to live with as much activity and support as they want. With living options like independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing all on the same campus, The Chesapeake gives folks space to enjoy their days at their own pace, with activities and services close at hand, and a plan for their future care.
