Madonna House is a 501c3 non-profit retirement community for adults 55 and older who can live on their own, with 130 apartments-99 are one-bedroom and 31 are two-bedroom-and all the units have features like wheelchair-accessible showers, grab bars, emergency pull cords in bedrooms and bathrooms, smoke detectors, sprinklers, and cable TV hookups in the bedrooms and living rooms, and you'll find the costs are kept lower through a tax credit program meaning the rent depends on your income, as long as it's below 60% of the Area Median Income. The building has controlled-access entry, so residents feel safe, and there's plenty to do because the community room is always open for activities like film showings, potlucks, bingo nights, card games, and shopping trips, and they organize activities including a weekly farmer's market, prayer services, and even trips when folk feel like getting out, plus you can bring cats or dogs as long as they're under the weight limit. The lounge room on every floor has books and games, the game room is open for cards or a quick chat, and the craft room gives everyone a place to do handiwork or join a class-some days you'll see the walking path with raised garden planters gets busy, and there's a library, a computer room, and a business center, too, for those who want to stay busy or read in a quiet place. The Madonna Beauty Shoppe is right inside the building, and a fitness center is there for residents to keep active, plus there's laundry facilities ready for everyone who needs them, which is helpful for older adults managing on their own, and a blood pressure clinic helps folks keep an eye on their health along with medication management available when needed. There's parking for those who drive, and a community van service at cost for when residents want to go to shopping centers, grocery stores, or nearby pharmacies, since public transportation and Mary Washington Hospital are not far away. The apartments include wheelchair accessible options, and some units are specially designed for handicapped access, so those who need a bit more space can get around easier. The building supports a sense of community, since people can be as social as they like with regular activities and the shared spaces, and for anyone with questions about aging, disabilities, post-military life, or staying well, helpful resource information is available for free, because Madonna House aims to make things easier for people 55 and up looking for an affordable, active place to live.
Wonderful staff clean but pricey
I had a great experience - staff treated my mom and family wonderfully, the community is nice, grounds well maintained, and common areas spotless. The apartment was spacious with a kitchen and comfortable living space, and there were ample daily activities. Downsides: no meal plan, our room wasn't ready for medical rails and the layout wasn't ideal, and the price didn't fit us; despite that, I'd recommend it for the staff and cleanliness.
