Cedar Glen Senior Apartments sits at 1661 River's Bend Lane in Wauwatosa, Milwaukee, and offers 80 one- and two-bedroom apartments for people 55 and older who are looking for affordable, age-restricted housing; the building, made with wood framing above an underground parking garage, opened in 2012 and covers about 71,500 square feet, and while it's a newer place with clean halls and big closets, the property used to be a gravel quarry and a spot for construction rubble back in the 1950s, so that's an interesting bit of history there. Residents at Cedar Glen have a few choices depending on their needs-some live independently while others might use assisted living, skilled nursing, or memory care, especially if they're living with conditions like Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, and the staff gets specially trained for those challenges. The apartments come with their own appliances, controlled heat and air conditioning, decent-sized walk-in closets in some units, washers and dryers available either in the unit or on-site for $1.50 per load, and each place has either a patio or balcony for some fresh air, plus there's free Wi-Fi, all smoke-free building and grounds, and the rent covers heat, water, and local municipal services. People who live here get access to outdoor gardens, walking paths, and plenty of spots to sit, and indoors there are several community spaces like a club room, a kitchen, a library, a business center, and an activity room, so there's always somewhere to go for coffee chats, game nights, catered dinners, or just reading a book in a quiet place. Cedar Glen is pet-friendly and allows both cats and dogs, so folks who want to bring a furry friend have that option, and for people who drive, there's underground parking and a well-kept parking garage, but public transit is also nearby for those who'd rather not get behind the wheel. The place tries to give residents both comfort and security, with features like controlled entry, responsive 24-hour emergency maintenance, and extra storage if you need it; the management and on-site team keep things running, and there's a beautician who visits for those wanting some grooming or personal care. Friends and family can join residents in the dining area at mealtimes, and a schedule of social, educational, and recreational activities is posted regularly to help keep everyone interested and engaged, though no place gets everything right for every person. Cedar Glen offers services like home care and companionship for those who need a little help in their daily lives, plus assisted services for bathing, dressing, and medication, along with specialized memory care for those with dementia, all in a setting that tries to balance dignity, independence, and peace of mind. The property's history of leasing up quickly and its mix of funding sources like Section 42 tax credits and county and federal money show it was planned as an affordable place for seniors, and with a rating of 3.0 from four reviews, it seems people have mixed feelings, but for someone looking for active, pet-friendly, and maintenance-free senior living with options for care as you need them, it offers a range of possibilities and amenities to fit different lifestyles.
Clean, convenient apartments with caveats
I toured the beautiful, clean apartments across from the Wauwatosa police station and I'm planning to reserve one. The units are fresh with good-sized rooms and a large closet (no linen closet by the bathroom); some have in-unit washer/dryers and there's an on-site laundry ($1.50). Heat and electric are included, the parking garage is nice, and it's convenient to Mayfair Mall, banks and restaurants - though there's a lot of construction nearby and shopping access felt mixed. Fitness-room availability was unclear.
