    About Regalcare At Greenwich

RegalCare at Greenwich was a chronic and convalescent nursing home with a 75-bed capacity, located on King Street in Greenwich. This facility served the local community by providing long-term care services to residents in need of rehabilitation and skilled nursing support. The home was part of a group of nursing homes operated out of a headquarters in Pomona, New York, and was listed in annual reports as being owned and operated by Eli Mirlis. RegalCare at Greenwich employed about 60 unionized workers tasked with providing essential services in nursing, food service, and housekeeping.

The facility faced significant challenges during its operation, including being severely affected by the remnants of Hurricane Ida in early September of its final year. The storm caused extensive water leakage and a power failure, prompting the evacuation of 46 residents. The majority of these residents were transported to another nearby skilled nursing center for continued care, while two required medical attention at a local hospital. In the aftermath of the storm, the building stood vacant and locked, with no clear information available about plans to reopen or repair the damaged structure.

Union representatives expressed concern about the closure, attributing it to chronic under-funding and insufficient oversight, and highlighting the resulting impact on residents, staff, and the wider community’s access to affordable long-term care. In addition to dealing with disaster-related setbacks, the nursing home was hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, experiencing a number of COVID-related resident deaths over a span of several months, according to state health department data.

Financial filings with the state reported that RegalCare at Greenwich had revenues of $9.00 million and expenditures of $8.57 million in its last full year of operation. The care home also became subject to legal action, with MBS Limited, a medical-supply company, filing a lawsuit for nonpayment of delivered supplies. Conditions surrounding the closure were further complicated by communication challenges, as visitors to the facility’s website encountered notices of ongoing phone and internet disruptions. The aftermath left the building vacant and the future of the care home unresolved.
