Leeway is a pioneering skilled nursing center dedicated exclusively to supporting individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Established in 1995, it stands as Connecticut’s first and only free-standing facility of its kind, developed with the specific intention of providing comprehensive care tailored to the unique needs of those affected by HIV/AIDS. Over the years, Leeway has built a strong tradition of excellence, ensuring that each resident receives not only the intensive medical attention they require but also compassionate support for other challenges attendant to the illness.
The continuum of care at Leeway is both diverse and far-reaching. The center offers 30 skilled nursing beds and 30 residential care beds, catering to varying levels of medical needs and personal independence. Additionally, Leeway provides 41 independent housing units, creating opportunities for residents to reclaim autonomy and dignity as part of their recovery. Beyond these on-site accommodations, Leeway also extends its support through comprehensive community case management. This network ensures that individuals have access to critical resources and ongoing support as they transition toward greater independence or manage chronic conditions outside the facility.
Care at Leeway encompasses far more than simply addressing the physical aspects of HIV/AIDS. The team provides intensive medical and nursing services, along with a full spectrum of behavioral health support within a nurturing and positive environment. Recognizing the complex interplay between HIV/AIDS, addiction, mental health, and other chronic conditions, the center delivers integrated treatment plans that address these co-occurring diagnoses. Each resident benefits from initiatives designed to maximize their quality of life, whether through inpatient or outpatient healthcare, housing solutions tailored to individual needs, or the vital connects of case management.
A focus on innovation and person-centered care drives everything at Leeway. The team is deeply committed to helping individuals renew their health, revive their hope, and reclaim their independence. Over nearly three decades, the facility’s work has played a transformative role in the lives of countless people in the Greater New Haven community and beyond. Leeway’s programs and services are made possible in large part through generous donor support, which fuels continued innovation in service offerings and gives residents the tools they need for recovery and stability. At its core, Leeway is a place where hope is nurtured, health is restored, and a brighter future is fostered for people living with HIV/AIDS.
