    Understaffed, inconsistent care; improvements noted

I put my relative at Carlton at the Lake and liked the beautiful first floor and lakefront location - the receptionist and some staff were warm and helpful. Unfortunately it's chronically understaffed and inconsistent: CNAs stretched thin, nurses mainly dispensing meds, medication delays, poor incontinence/hygiene care (missed showers, urine on the floor), bugs, missing belongings, and safety incidents. Rooms are small/outdated, cleanliness and meals are often poor (bland/Styrofoam), and communication/privacy problems are common. New admins (JoAnne, Roland) have made real improvements and I'm more confident now, but care remains hit-or-miss - check current staffing and oversight before committing.

Carlton At the Lake is a for-profit nursing home with 244 rooms that gives around-the-clock supervision and care, so folks who need help at all hours can get it, and they've got a call system you can use day or night if you need anything right away, plus nurses are there from 12 to 16 hours every day to help people who can't walk on their own, and there's hands-on help with moving, bathing, dressing, taking medicine, and other daily needs like getting from bed to chair or to the bathroom, and both private and semi-private rooms have high-speed internet, cable TV, and include housekeeping, laundry, and daily linen service, so you don't have to fuss over cleaning or missing a favorite show, and there's always a nurse around for skilled care, including for post-hospital rehabilitation, ventilator care, wound care, long-term stays, short-term respite, transitional help, hospice, and special programs for cardiac and respiratory care, with pulmonologists, nurses, and respiratory therapists right there twenty-four hours a day and certified wound specialists that come by each week to check on things. Carlton At the Lake has all sorts of therapies like physical, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapy, and they'll tailor those to what you need, and they've got a full pharmacy service and will help arrange visits from outside doctors, dentists, podiatrists, psychologists, or psychiatrists if you need it, plus they handle your medicines and offer dental, foot, and psychiatric services, and even family counseling. There are places to relax and enjoy-the chapel if you want quiet, a full-service hair salon if you feel like sprucing up, a library, a Living Care aviary for watching birds, a garden patio with a little waterfall, and a nice dining room where you can celebrate special times with family, with meals made for special diets, and private and semi-private suites have all the modern basics, so you and your roommate, if you have one, don't have to argue over internet or TV. They've got a warm atmosphere and offer lots of activities-there's sports, clubs, outings, and games, plus a special activity center with regular fun things to do. Carlton At the Lake gets residents and families involved with a resident council and a family council that can bring up suggestions or concerns, building a sense of community that can make family visits feel a little easier. There's pet therapy and transportation for appointments or outings. Admission happens through a full assessment by a group that includes doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, and dietitians, so you'll have a plan set up for everything you need, and everything happens with a holistic approach, looking at health from all angles, and every new resident gets a care plan made just for them.
