The Elms maintains a robust team, employing over 100 staff members who work together to create a welcoming and attentive atmosphere for residents and their families. This team includes a wide range of professionals, such as Jeff Howd, the Administrator, and the clinical staff led by Tanner Burke, R.N., Director of Nursing; Ashley Byars, R.N., Assistant Director of Nursing; and Kim Enzeroth, R.N., MDS Coordinator. Supporting the daily life and wellbeing of residents are individuals like TaHoney Oats, Director of Food Service; Betsy Matthews, Director of Housekeeping & Laundry; Jane Hasley, Director of Activities; Kassie Metcalf, Director of Social Service; Debby Dallefeld, Director of Marketing/Admissions; Myron Sinnett, Director of Maintenance; and Gina Bickers, Director of Business & Personnel. This dedicated staff works collaboratively to ensure that every aspect of care, comfort, and support is addressed.
The history of The Elms is deeply rooted in the community, beginning in 1856 as the County Poor Farm and later transitions to the Almshouse in Scotland Township in 1884. For generations, it served as a haven for those in need. In 1949, the facility evolved into a nursing home, taking on the new designation of The Elms Nursing Home. With growing needs and a commitment to better care, the facility moved to a new location in the former TB Sanatorium in Bushnell in 1950. When that building could no longer meet the evolving standards and requirements, a new facility was opened on October 9, 1977, which stands today as The Elms.
Supporting the mission of The Elms is the Blanche Martin Estate, a unique endowment established through the generosity of Blanche Martin, a longtime resident of McDonough County. She entrusted the annual earnings of her 120-acre farm to McDonough County, with instructions to use the proceeds to help keep costs down for The Elms’ residents. This memorial fund continues to be instrumental in enhancing the quality of life for all who call The Elms home, enabling the acquisition of new amenities and improvements over the years.
Every day, The Elms strives to create a partnership among community members, staff, residents, and families. There is a continuous effort to maintain dignity, comfort, and trust throughout every stage of life’s journey. From medical and therapeutic care to activities, social work, food service, and general maintenance, the staff is dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging and well-being. This commitment is evident in every detail of daily life, contributing to a supportive and compassionate environment at The Elms.
