Protection Valley Manor has a rich history rooted in the heart of Protection, Kansas, and stands as a testament to the dedication and unified spirit of its local community. The inspiration behind the Manor dates back to January 14, 1971, when Glen Maris first called a meeting to discuss the possibility of establishing a skilled nursing home. The enthusiasm and backing from the townspeople was so strong that, within days, a committee of twelve men and two women was formed with the goal of raising $50,000 to help bring the project to life. Though early efforts faced setbacks, the unwavering commitment of Protection’s residents ultimately saw the project revived, leading to the city council’s unanimous vote to issue Industrial Revenue Bonds for construction and equipment. With the determined leadership and vision of the Protection Community Development Corporation, which included Alfred Zimmerman, Ralph Baker, Jay Overocker, Juanita Glenn, and Atlee Edmonston, the Manor’s foundation was laid. H.H. Meyer Construction took charge of building the facility, culminating in groundbreaking ceremonies on March 11, 1973, and an open house and dedication the following year.
From its earliest days, Protection Valley Manor has embraced the philosophy that every individual is unique and deserving of a full, meaningful life. The focus has always been on fostering a sense of family among residents and staff—a place where laughter and love are part of daily living, and where challenges are faced together. Over the years, the Manor has provided a wide variety of activities tailored to the personal preferences of each resident, ensuring that life at the Manor remains vibrant, dynamic, and deeply connected. Meals are cherished occasions marked by socialization and the pleasures of home-cooked food, reinforcing the close-knit, welcoming atmosphere that defines life within its walls.
Adaptation and growth have marked the Manor’s journey through the decades. Guided by forward-thinking administrators and attentive staff, the Manor evolved to better serve both geriatric and mental health needs, expanding its offerings by establishing a dual facility with dedicated mental health and geriatric beds. This innovative step proved to be beneficial for residents and the wider community, further cementing the Manor's reputation as a vital resource. In 2007, recognizing the importance of keeping the environment comfortable and welcoming, the facility underwent significant updates, including a new dining room and an expanded kitchen under the leadership at that time, ensuring that modern comforts complemented the home’s enduring spirit.
As the years have passed, Protection Valley Manor has remained a cornerstone of compassion and care, continually thriving and embracing necessary updates. The manor houses 45 residents and operates as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation, sustained by the generosity and dedication of the community it serves. Protection Valley Manor stands as a proud reflection of the community’s resolve, celebrating its legacy while unwaveringly committed to enriching the lives of every individual who calls it home.
