    Helpful staff, severe neglect, unacceptable

I wanted to like this place - the staff I met were warm and helpful, the food was healthy and appetizing, and amenities (large terrace with Northern Manhattan views, Shabbat chapel, salon, gym, outdoor patio and big movie library) genuinely made my grandmother happy. But the decor is bland, renovations are outdated, resident floors are poorly maintained, and administration can be unprofessional. More importantly, we suffered serious neglect: missing and urine-soaked belongings, an insultingly low compensation offer, alleged racial bias, and delayed care that resulted in an amputation - we moved her to an excellent nursing home. Because of those failures I cannot recommend this facility despite some caring staff.

About Fort Tryon Center For Rehabilitation And Nursing

Fort Tryon Center For Rehabilitation And Nursing sits in the Cloisters section of Upper Manhattan and looks out over the city from its outdoor terraces, and with 205 beds, the facility supports folks leaving the hospital who need rehab or longer-term care. You'll find wound care, tracheostomy care, dementia and hospice care, a Long Term Home Health Care Program, and full skilled nursing, so many medical needs are taken care of on site, and they even have IV therapy and a special focus on infection prevention. Nurses and therapists work closely with patients through rehab, including neurological, orthopedic, and wound care services, and there're therapies like physical, occupational, and speech, so patients can get stronger for returning home or managing their recovery. The staff tries for a warm and devoted environment, and family is always encouraged to visit, with no fixed visiting hours, though they suggest coming between 11 am and 8 pm, and you can even bring children or pets if you follow their guidelines, and for special occasions, you can reserve outdoor terrace sections.

Meal services pay attention to health needs and Jewish traditions, with a Glatt Kosher kitchen run under supervision of the Vaad Harabanim of Queens with a mashgiach present each day; special meals are prepared for Shabbos and Yom Tov holidays, and meals are served on a set schedule in both dining rooms and resident rooms. The recreation room has a big TV, Wii, and plenty of puzzles, books, and magazines, and there's an internet café, a well-stocked library, and computer access with free Wi-Fi and cable TV, plus premium channels, and a beauty salon and personal laundry service are also on site. Medical suites handle geriatric and internal medicine along with dental and podiatry needs, and for rehab or daily needs, staff run adult day care programs and offer pet therapy. The whole building is smoke-free, and the staff tries to keep it comfortable and safe, using infection prevention and safety protocols for all emergencies. Visitors can easily get to the building on the A Train or the M4 bus to 190th Street, and free parking is available at the Laz Parking Garage nearby with validation from the front desk. The facility allows gift giving, holds seasonal toy drives, and has regular activities to help people feel at home during their stay or rehab.
