Texas Institute For Clinically Complex Care is a large skilled nursing home in Houston, Texas, that provides both short-term and long-term care, mainly for seniors with serious and complicated medical conditions that need around-the-clock attention after illness, surgery, or hospitalization, and you'll find they follow hospital transfer protocols and can order X-rays or hospitalizations if someone needs it, and they also document detailed incident and injury reports for residents, using mechanical lifts with visible safety signs and proper inspection records for transfers, while making sure staff get training on safe transfers, and they work with physical therapy as part of care, with a nurse manager (DON) overseeing the health of the residents, and you'll find plenty of the amenities you'd expect, like all-day dining, a dining room set up for restaurant-style meals prepared by a professional chef, special diet options, outdoor walking paths, a fitness room, and even gardens. The facility has private rooms with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, cable TV, phones, and Wi-Fi so people can relax with some comfort, and staff help out with daily needs like bathing, dressing, moving around, and medication management, giving special non-ambulatory care support for folks who need it. Nurses are present 12 to 16 hours a day and the home offers 24-hour supervision with an emergency alert system, plus community activities like movie nights, music programs, and various social events, along with housekeeping, laundry, and transportation help. The place gets its funding from Medicare and Medicaid and has up to 120 beds approved for those programs, though it can accommodate 202 people overall, but there isn't a resident council or family council for feedback. The home's focus on safety includes using a proper sprinkler system and supervision to help prevent falls and other accidents, and they have clear rules for handling incidents, though government inspections have found many problems, including over $88,000 in fines, 70 recorded complaints, and several large penalties for severe deficiencies, reflected in its low ratings in staff (1 out of 5), quality (3 out of 5), and health (1 out of 5), with an overall rating at 1 out of 5, and a staff-to-resident ratio noted as 1.8 nurse hours per person per day and 0.47 staff hours per day, which is below average for similar facilities in the city and in Texas. The nursing home is a for-profit business and has been under its current owners for less than two years, connected to a continuing care retirement community, and is set inside a hospital setting. Anyone wanting more information can look at their webpage with resources for care choices, but families should know the facility's rankings are toward the bottom, coming in at 1144th out of 1233 nursing homes in Texas and 134th out of 152 in Houston. While the staff do their best to meet the clinical needs of seniors with complex health care conditions and provide basic comforts and safety, it's important for folks to weigh the pros and cons, especially considering the recent inspection history and the relatively low ratings.

Attentive staff, poor communication, unreliable
I appreciate the attentive nurses, CNAs, therapists and generally clean, friendly environment - my loved one improved and even looks forward to returning. But communication was inconsistent and poor (hard to reach by phone, limited/contradictory updates; I wanted a single point of contact). Basic care and operations were unreliable: missed showers, ignored dietary needs, repetitive/cold poor-quality food, slow trays, broken equipment, internet/shower/temperature issues and even roaches. Overall there are pockets of very good care, but management, communication and basic-care reliability need urgent improvement.
