San Juan Nursing Home, founded in 1965 by Rev. Jose M. Aspiazu, O.M.I., is a faith-based, not-for-profit nursing home led by the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville and offers care for seniors with physical or mental health conditions, including dementia, and has 24-hour nursing and personal care services along with emergency call systems for residents who might need help at any hour, and they've made sure their staff provides support and services like short- and long-term nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, IV therapy, wound care, tracheostomy care, pain management, plastic surgery, G-Tube management, and special therapies like VitalStim, LSVT, and Guardian NMES, which means residents can get a range of medical support depending on their condition, and if someone needs daily help with regular tasks or more advanced care, they can find that here. The nursing home offers palliative, respite, and hospice care for advanced health needs, and houses seniors who require nursing or residential care, always following a mission to respect the dignity and sacredness of all people, with a commitment to Service with Love, and provides spiritual support, including Sunday Mass and pastoral care. Since San Juan Nursing Home is certified for Medicare and Medicaid, residents who meet the requirements can use their benefits for care. Programs are personalized to each resident, aiming to support their spiritual, social, and physical wellbeing, and the facility offers rehabilitation and counseling, wound and ostomy care, BiPAP and CPAP therapy, TPN, restorative exercises, and recreational activities. The community also has access to many resources, like a health library, symptom checker, help with disaster mental health, opioid resources, suicide prevention, elder abuse help, home health agencies, care guides, and support for people with disabilities. The facility has a focus on both healthcare and the matters of faith, enriching the lives of residents, helping each person stay safe, healthy, and cared for, while making sure spiritual needs are met, which you'll notice if you stay there or know someone who does.
Caring staff, clean, limited access
I toured this religious non-profit senior living facility and found the nursing staff caring and personable, the building always clean, and respectful of blindness. They provide daily bathing, therapy, in-house meals tailored and well presented, plus lots of activities (bingo, laughing yoga, daily exercise) and a chaplain with daily services and in-room visits. Care was good overall, but privacy rules and limited visitation mean staff won't verify patient status by phone and I ran into unhelpful staff about access-visit in person before deciding. One downside: my loved one couldn't eat their meals because of a feeding tube, though the food itself seemed fine.
