Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU is dedicated to providing specialized and compassionate care for children with ongoing health conditions that require both medical and nursing supervision. More than 30 children reside in the Transitional Care Unit, where they receive round-the-clock attention tailored to their unique needs. The care team goes beyond the roles of nurses and therapists; they are also teachers, recreation therapists, neighbors, and friends to each child, nurturing an environment that fosters growth and comfort.
The hospital is proud to be recognized by the American Health Care Association as a Silver Award – Achievement in Quality facility, a distinction that only three percent of long-term care facilities in Virginia have attained. This award highlights the hospital’s commitment to sustainable quality outcomes and processes, underscoring their dedication to delivering exceptional care.
Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU offers specialized services for children who need both ongoing medical oversight and access to specialized equipment or therapeutic services. Admissions are accepted through transfers from other facilities or directly from home, ensuring continuity of care that adapts to the needs of each child. The care provided is designed to support children who require a minimum of ongoing medical and nursing care, often accompanied by specialized, state-of-the-art services.
Within the facility, two neighborhoods are designed to offer comprehensive, modern care environments where both the children and their families are supported. Each child’s clinical care is directed by an attending physician who leads an interdisciplinary team comprising nursing, respiratory therapy, recreation therapy, social work, pastoral care, nutrition, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy professionals. These teams collaborate to address the complexities of each child’s condition, ensuring a holistic, family-centered approach to healthcare.
Facilities such as the Children's Pavilion building and Children's Tower provide advanced infrastructure tailored to pediatric care. Meanwhile, the Fredericksburg Multispecialty Center and Virginia Treatment Center for Children buildings offer additional specialized services and support for families navigating long-term or complex health journeys. The Transitional Care Unit, in particular, stands out as a nurturing and expertly regulated environment, recognized with specific awards for excellence.
Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU focuses intensely on the needs of children and their families, working diligently to create a supportive and comfortable atmosphere for healing and development. Whether through long-term care, advanced therapies in nephrology and behavioral health, or community programs, the hospital strives to be not just a place for medical treatment, but a true home and community for the children it serves.
