    Beautiful facility but unsafe neglectful

I moved in for the spotless, gorgeous rooms, upscale Palo Alto location, lovely pool, chef-prepared dinners and an activities director who knows everyone - the dining, rehab and many caregivers can be wonderful. But despite friendly front-desk staff, I experienced dangerous care failures: unresponsive call/emergency buttons, missed meals, unchanged diapers leading to rashes/bed sores, broken equipment, understaffed direct care and poor management communication. Beautiful facility, but unsafe and neglectful for frail elders - I cannot recommend it.

    About Webster House

Webster House is a senior living community in Palo Alto, California, at 401 Webster St., and you'll see it's part of the Front Porch group, which also runs other places in Antioch, Brentwood, Dublin, Fremont, and Hayward, and what really stands out is the way they set up both independent and assisted living for adults 55 and older who want different levels of care now or as their needs change over time, and some folks stay independent while others may need more help with daily living or memory care. They have a skilled nursing center at 437 Webster St. that's right nearby. The licensed capacity is 54 residents, and Webster House consistently gets high marks from residents and their families, showing up with a community score of 9.1 out of 10 in reviews.

Apartments in Webster House come in studio, alcove, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom floor plans, so some have kitchenettes, private bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas, big windows for daylight, walk-in closets, and, as many people do like, patios or balconies to catch some fresh air. You'll find things like cable TV, the emergency call system, and wireless internet too, and in a way, you could say the setups make things less complicated with everything on-hand, and there's pet-friendly options for those who want to keep cats or dogs with them.

The community has a bit of a boutique feeling, not too big, and offers both privacy and a sense of closeness, and people grow real friendships there over time, with places to gather such as game rooms, a billiard lounge, card rooms, spacious dining areas with white linens, and small corners for reading or watching something in the video theater, and there's a library too, for those who still like holding a book. You'll see a fitness room where they hold wellness classes and exercise, a swimming pool that's fenced for safety, and a garden and outdoor patios, so there's room to move about if you want some sun or company.

Housekeeping and linen laundry services help people keep up with chores, and meal times happen in restaurant-style dining rooms with food served to tables, not a buffet line, and they try to keep things comfortable for those with different dietary needs. The staff helps with medication reminders, personal care like bathing or getting dressed, and there's support for grocery shopping and arranging transportation for doctors' appointments or local outings-not just for clinic visits. Nurses stay on-site up to 16 hours a day, and there's a 24-hour call system, so there's always someone nearby if you need anything, and the on-site clinic connects to Stanford University's School of Medicine for more specialized health needs. There's also respite care for those needing short-term stays.

This is a buy-in community, so folks purchase their apartments rather than come and go as guests. They offer several different financial plans and the staff will walk people through everything with tours or private meetings, and there's information about floor plans and pricing for those who want to compare. You'll often see daily activities like crafts, lifelong learning programs, spiritual support, volunteer chances, social events, and even resident-run gatherings-which help people stay involved at their own pace, and you can always try something new without pressure. The Front Porch organization puts a lot of thought into keeping things flexible, so care and routines adapt to how needs might change as people get older.

The surrounding Palo Alto neighborhood is easy to walk, which can make running errands or just visiting with friends part of daily life, and in the community itself, the staff encourages everyone to connect and look out for each other so it never feels too big or anonymous. Webster House is open from 9 in the morning until 5 in the evening, Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays, so you'll need to plan ahead, but for people looking for a welcoming setting with on-demand care and ample amenities, especially those wanting to stay local to Palo Alto, Webster House remains one of the more steady options in the area.
