    Active community with outstanding activities

I love living here - it's a busy, friendly community with an outstanding activities program (painting, watercolor pencils, jewelry making, Spintopia, Aqua Fitness, yoga, Tai Chi, memoir and Parkinson's support groups, even "Learning Values Through Folk Stories" with Rabbi Kogen) and real opportunities to teach or lead classes. The staff are warm, attentive and helpful (special shoutout to Cecelia the careful, friendly driver and Zest Director Alisa), housekeeping and services are excellent, and transportation to shopping and classic movies is great. My apartment is beautiful, spacious and comfortable - luxurious compared to other places I've seen - and I've made strong friendships that reduce loneliness. Downsides: tech can be frustrating if you're not savvy, dining requires reservations I sometimes forget and the meal plan isn't ideal for organic/non-GMO diets (I often bring my own food), and a den/privacy area could use remodeling. Overall this is a hidden gem with exceptional care and nonstop activities - I'd recommend it.

    About Avocet Playa Vista

Avocet Playa Vista sits at 12490 Fielding Circle, right in the Playa Vista neighborhood, and offers a mix of living options for seniors including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement community services, all under one roof, which means residents can get more or less help as their needs change without moving. The place has a license for up to 286 residents and gets recognition for its kind staff, welcoming community, and helpful resources that families seem to appreciate, and the Senior Resource Group runs it as part of its group of senior living communities. You'll see features like well-kept private apartments and suites, walking paths, gardens, a fitness room, art rooms, a spa, a library, a dining area with chef-prepared meals and varied options, and spaces for both group events and quiet time, so people can enjoy their lifestyles and connect with others in their own way, and there's even pet-friendly policies if someone wants to bring a cat or bird along.

Avocet Playa Vista provides support for regular activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, medication reminders, and personal care, plus it helps folks with memory loss or chronic health needs including diabetes and incontinence care, and has special programs like Enliven Creative & Adaptive Memory Care for Alzheimer's and dementia. There's a strong healthcare framework too: nurses are there between 12 to 16 hours a day, a staff member is always close at hand thanks to a 24-hour call system, and an on-site skilled nursing unit exists for those who need more medical care than regular assisted living can offer. For residents who want to stay active or enjoy some quiet time, there's a lot of social and recreational activities, opportunities for creative and educational programs, classes, and trips, and even a holistic lifestyle program that helps people stay strong and engaged as they get older. The meals focus on good nutrition, with seasonal menus and fresh ingredients, and there's help with housekeeping, maintenance, and laundry, which takes a load off daily chores.

The layout by Gensler, which has actually won a national AIA award, gives the whole place a modern look, and the overall atmosphere feels like it supports both those seeking a busy social life and those who value privacy and quiet hobbies. The community joins in local healthcare advocacy and works with the Long-Term Care Ombudsman, so people there tend to have a voice in their care and living standards. If someone's looking for short-term help, the respite care option might help out primary caregivers for a little while, giving families peace of mind that their loved one's needs are met no matter how things change. Extra resources exist to help families plan for care costs and navigate government programs, insurance, or other ways to cover fees, and the Enliven Memory Care program even works on a month-to-month basis with no large initial entrance fee, which takes some worry out of making a big commitment.

In all, Avocet Playa Vista supports older adults who want to age in place, who need help with daily routines, or who live with complex health conditions, and provides a place where both seniors and their families can expect steady care, a full calendar, and a sense of community in a part of L.A. that's easy to reach and woven right into the wider Playa Vista area. The facility does not accept Medicare payment unless certified by CMS.
