Devonshire Oaks Nursing Center sits up in the hills of Redwood City near hospitals like Sequoia Hospital, Stanford Hospital, and Mills Peninsula Hospital, and it's got this mix of studio apartment-style rooms set up for memory care with safety features like sprinkler systems and handicap access, so folks get help with both safety and comfort, while the place offers simple things like cable TV, WiFi, housekeeping, washer and dryer use, and laundry services, and the dining room is always serving meals. The building stays open all day and night, with walk-in family visits allowed any time, though if you want a tour the staff would rather you call ahead Monday through Friday in business hours, but honestly, you can get in after hours if you set it up. There are fitness rooms, activities and game spaces, and even a salon/barbershop, so folks don't just sit around, and the staff puts together memory care programs, social activities, crafts, music, education, and wellness classes, all with therapists, dietitians, and nurses on hand if needed, and if residents want to see a specialist or need to get to the doctor, transportation is offered. The center does wound care, pain management, stroke recovery, and has therapy for speech, occupational, and physical needs, which helps residents with more complex health problems like heart failure, diabetes, MS, or even amputation, and they have a lot of folks living with memory loss who need special attention. Nursing assistants and personal care helpers stay on round the clock, working to keep people safe and healthy, with long-term and short-term rehab and respite care, and they use software called Ensocare Choice that helps families and patients stay in the loop on decisions and care plans, so nobody feels lost. They keep everything clean and supplied with PPE, watching out for COVID-19, and there's a lot of talk about having a "family feeling of care," since the staff works to be loving and responsive, with the goal to give respect, dignity, and a safe, calm spot for elders. The center has options for people using long-term care insurance, and families needing support for caregiving or planning can get information from the team. While the place holds a five-star nursing home quality rating for care, folks online have mixed feelings, and the reviews average out to about 2.6 out of 5, but the staff try their best and seem focused on keeping everyone's physical, emotional, and social needs covered, whether a person needs a lot of help or a little.

Kind staff but unsafe, understaffed
I appreciated that many nurses and caregivers - and staff like social worker Olga, director Bernadette and A. Chand - were kind and competent, and the initial hospital-to-facility transition felt positive. But the stay felt unsafe: wrong medication and delays, chronic understaffing (sometimes 1 staff for 12 patients), PT didn't coach, and management/DON lacked compassion and professionalism. The building was very cold with no heat and insufficient blankets, food was mostly canned with no fresh fruit, personal hygiene items were missing on arrival, bathrooms were shared by four people, and staff were hard to reach. Grateful for the caring aides, but overall very poor quality of care - I do not recommend.
