    Beautiful facility, attentive care, concerns

I had a mixed experience. The building is beautiful, clean, boutique-style and family-oriented with a lovely patio and excellent therapy - nurses, PT and speech were compassionate and helped my loved one improve, and staff generally let family stay with her. However, rooms and the dining/entry areas are small, door safety and cramped layouts concern me, and I encountered slow or rude phone/nurse responsiveness, spotty caregiver behavior and troubling hospital/insurance handling. Overall I recommend with caution: wonderful, attentive care is possible here, but watch for responsiveness and safety issues.

About St. Paul's Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation

St. Paul's Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation sits in a central spot in San Diego, where folks who need a little more help get care around-the-clock, every day, all year long, and you'll find it's not too big-a 59-bed place that feels almost like visiting with family instead of living in a hospital or a big institution, especially with its single nursing station that keeps things calm and less overwhelming. The rooms, all fixed up after the 2018 renovation, are set up for comfort, with options for private or semi-private spaces that have their own climate controls, privacy curtains, cable TV, and restrooms, so you don't have to give up dignity for help. There's skilled nursing here, so trained nurses and aides handle everything from daily care like dressing and bathing to wound care and medical needs, and they work alongside rehab specialists for physical, occupational, and speech therapy, so folks can regain as much strength or skill as possible after an injury, surgery, or illness, making good use of their dedicated therapy center. The McCall Center is a hub for these therapies and activities, and meals-focused on being nutritious with good ingredients-are served in bright dining rooms or taken to the resident's room if that's easier or more comfortable. Staff members get noticed for their warmth and skill-people say they're both caring and professional, and therapists and caregivers are well liked. Every resident has a care plan that's made just for them, and there's always someone to help no matter the time of day, including short-term respite stays for those who need extra help only for a little while. The staff plans activities every day, ranging from live music and group exercises to trivia and outings, since staying active and social is important, and the team pays attention to mental and spiritual needs too, not just the physical stuff. St. Paul's is part of St. Paul's Senior Services, so you'll find strong connections with other local programs like independent or assisted living, memory care, managed medical care, and day programs, which helps residents and families find what fits best. The place stays clean and looks just about like the photographs, and it's close enough to the city and parks that getting outside is pretty easy for those able. St. Paul's accepts Medicare and some Medi-Cal, and people say meals, laundry, and therapy help round out everyday life here. All in all, the community sets itself apart with a quieter, more personalized feel, regular active programs, and a team that believes in keeping the resident in the center of all decisions, always aiming for recovery, comfort, and a bit more independence with each day.
