    Clean, friendly, affordable small community

I toured this 45-bed facility and found it clean, updated, and homey with spacious apartments, a lovely dining/dayroom, lots of activities, and great value. The administrator and most staff were warm, caring, responsive, and made the transition easy. It's best for low-care/ambulatory residents-medical services and amenities are minimal-and there were occasional reception delays and a crowded lobby. Overall I'd recommend it if you want affordability, friendliness, and a pleasant, well-run small community.

    About West Hills Assisted Living

West Hills Assisted Living sits over on Shoup Avenue in West Hills, CA, and it's a place where older adults, generally people over 55 or sometimes 62, come to live among others their age and enjoy a sense of community, so nobody feels left out. With 45 available units and a state license to house up to 90 residents, the facility offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care all under one roof, and they have what's called a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly license, which means they have to meet certain standards set by the state of California, license number 197610121. Apartments are roomy and bright, have their own climate control, private bathroom, closet, and even high-speed internet and cable if you want, so residents can feel settled and comfortable, and there's a choice of different suites, so everyone can pick what suits their needs and taste.

The community really offers a variety of services-around-the-clock staff help with things like dressing, bathing, medication reminders, and even transferring from bed to chair if someone needs it, although they don't admit folks who use wheelchairs. They also look after residents with Alzheimer's or other kinds of dementia, and there's a memory care program that's designed especially for those needs and uses support from programs like Medicaid and Medicare where possible, though the cost for memory care tends to be a good deal higher than regular care-about three times more than standard healthcare for seniors. Monthly wellness visits from a primary care doctor, third-party medical support, and medication management are part of the deal, with help for daily tasks, incontinence care, and mobility support as needed.

Housekeeping and laundry services are part of daily life, and staff prepare nutritious meals three times a day, including vegetarian and allergy-sensitive options, in a dining hall where you'll see staff serving up home-cooked food from menus that a dietitian plans out, and there are snacks passed around throughout the day too, including a dessert cart at lunch and dinner, so folks don't go hungry or miss out on little pleasures. There are family days, birthday parties, and live music at Sunday dinners, and people from the community sometimes come in to entertain or lead activities, so it breaks up the routine.

The place is laid out so everyone can stay active and connected, with multipurpose rooms, arts and crafts sessions, daily fitness hour, walking paths, a library with both books and magazines, a TV room with an organ, and outdoor patios with garden furniture where residents can also smoke if they want, since smoking is allowed in that outdoor area. If someone likes gardening or sitting outside, there's a community garden too, and sunny spaces for those who like natural light. The Chapel Room often has music in the background for quiet reflection. The whole place has emergency call systems and intercoms for safety, and professional caregivers are there 24 hours a day, so if help's needed, someone's always around.

Transportation and parking are available, and there's coordination for moving in, so families don't feel left in the dark. Staff provide personal service for appointments and routine needs if someone can't get around easily. Pets are sometimes allowed depending on the situation, and people can personalize their space to feel at home. There's also plenty to do, with community-sponsored events, resident-run gatherings, trips to local events or attractions, and wellness programs that promote exercise, finger dexterity, and social engagement.

West Hills Assisted Living stands out for its steady, reliable approach to elder care, with well-trained, friendly staff who become like family to many, and the atmosphere stays pleasant and homey without a lot of fuss. The facility keeps strong relationships with nearby hospitals and rehab centers for folks who need a bit more care. Tours are encouraged so families and future residents can get a true sense of daily life, meal routines, and activities. The main goal stays the same day after day: help people feel safe, comfortable, and as independent as possible in a place where it's easy to make friends and keep in touch with loved ones.
