    Renovated facility but safety concerns

The facility is recently renovated, clean, and well kept with a beautiful courtyard, tasty meals, lots of activities (PT, birthday parties, therapy dogs) and many staff who are friendly, attentive and know residents by name - my dad loves it. That said, my experience with nursing was mixed and I encountered serious care lapses and safety/mail concerns that nearly led to a dangerous situation; admin/claims support was poor and I had to handle paperwork myself. Great atmosphere and activities, but weigh the staffing/safety and claims issues before deciding.

About Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home

Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home sits in Augusta's downtown medical district at 1101 15th Street and serves war veterans from Georgia who served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Cold War, and Persian Gulf; the building has several floors, private and semi-private rooms with their own bathrooms, kitchens, cable TV, and high-speed internet, with each room set up for emergencies and visits from family inside or outside in the courtyard when the weather's good, and folks who live there can keep small pets, too. The place is owned by the Georgia Department of Veterans Service, run with Augusta University, and approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which helps veterans get healthcare, benefits, insurance, and support navigating the different programs. The staff gets described as helpful and willing to address concerns, and residents get ongoing care and support for long-term or complicated health needs, including care for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other chronic illnesses in a dedicated memory unit. Nurses, aides, and therapists help with things like bathing, dressing, medication, wound care, and rehab after surgeries, and there's always someone around, day or night. Meals come from a professional chef and you can ask for allergy-friendly or special diets, plus you get restaurant-style dining any time during the day, which is nice since some folks don't like set meal times, and there are daily laundry, housekeeping, move-in coordination, and family support services, so everything stays clean and organized. There's transportation to medical visits, concierge help, and the place sorts federal Aid & Attendance benefits for veterans who qualify, which can help pay for care; for some with certain service-connected disabilities, the VA will pay the whole cost. There's a focus on training for geriatric care with Augusta University, and the building itself has a fitness room, walking paths, large outdoor garden, movie theater, activity and art rooms, library, music programs, beauty salon, and barbershop. Residents can spend time gardening or relaxing in community sitting areas, and there's support for family caregivers sorting long-term care insurance and related decisions. The facility only takes Georgia residents with active duty service during wartime, an honorable or "other than dishonorable" discharge, and no severe infections or uncontrolled behavioral or psychiatric problems, and it all requires paperwork like an application for health benefits and a payment agreement, which the staff helps people with. Reviews give the place a 3.2 out of 14 total, and social care and benefits help is available through a platform called findhelp, so veterans and their families get guidance through every step.
