    Caring staff but poor management

I had mixed experience: the direct caregivers were loving, attentive and compassionate - they made my mom comfortable, provided home-cooked, nutritious meals, and treated residents like family. However, ownership and management were neglectful: undertrained/overstretched staff at times, unprofessional behavior, poor upkeep (dirty areas, small/overcrowded rooms, repairs and outages left undone). I'm grateful for the frontline staff but wouldn't fully recommend the place until leadership and maintenance improve.

    About Brookhaven AFC Home

Brookhaven AFC Home is a small community in Columbiaville, Michigan, that serves seniors and adults with special needs in a home-like setting, and the place holds up to 11 residents in studio units, single bedrooms, or shared quarters, and people there get care that fits their needs whether they're independent and active or need support with daily tasks like getting dressed, bathing, or taking medicine, and there's always trained staff around the clock. The facility covers a lot of needs-assisted living, memory care for people living with dementia or Alzheimer's, home care, skilled nursing, adult daycare, residential care, and respite stays, so folks can get high acuity or diabetic care, help with showering, incontinence management, and non-ambulatory support, and there're services for people with developmental disabilities, physical handicaps, mental illness, and even traumatic brain injuries as well, since Brookhaven works to welcome and respect each person's differences.

You'll find group homes, personal apartments, and assisted living homes, many of which are barrier free for wheelchair use and those with physical impairments, and the property includes a dining room, café, gardening spaces, a media room, and public living areas, plus each room has central air, private bath options, emergency systems, and safety or disabled access features like grab bars. Meals can meet special dietary needs, and there's laundry, money management help, and regular housekeeping to keep things tidy, and folks can use internet and enjoy activities or outings, devotional services, and social programs both on and offsite.

The organization started back in 1989 as a family-run, nonprofit group-Redwood Inc.-and they uphold dignity for all, serving people of different ages and care levels, and they hold an adult medium group home license, number AM440290998, which covers their 3280 Trillium Lane address in Oxford, MI, and their license ran from December 2022 to December 2024, but as of July 1, 2023, they're closed. Residents who lived at Brookhaven got services like 24-hour care, medication management, fall management, routine health checks, and transportation for groceries, plus there's off-street parking, secured premises, walking paths, and private areas when someone wants their own space, and the community lets people bring pets if they like. So while the place did a lot and covered plenty of ground, it focused on making things easier for those who lived there, gave folks a say in how their care was planned, and supported everyone, whether older or facing other challenges, to live as safely and comfortably as possible.
