    Lovely facility, inconsistent care, communication

I appreciated the lovely, clean facility in a beautiful mountain location, friendly residents, good food and a few outstanding staff (Rachel in PT, Whitney in activities, Kelley). But I was upset by rude administration, visitation denials/COVID restrictions that left my elder isolated, staff yelling at family, and very poor communication. Care was inconsistent - therapy delays/poor coordination, understaffed CNAs, missed follow-through (e.g. Wi-Fi extender), and medication/attention lapses. At $7,500/month with unexplained increases and high turnover, the stress and management issues made this a poor fit for us despite some compassionate employees and a nice next-door community.

    About Brookdale Asheville Overlook

Brookdale Asheville Overlook offers assisted living, independent living, memory care, skilled nursing, and at-home care services all in one location, so if someone needs more care as their needs change, they won't have to move far. Residents can choose from private, semi-private, or companion suites, including two-bedroom units with shared bathrooms, and each room includes Wi-Fi, a telephone hookup, cable, and an emergency call system for safety. The staff provides personal care like help with dressing, bathing, grooming, medication management, mobility, and continence assistance, plus daily housekeeping and laundry services, and there's 24-hour staff on call for any emergencies. Folks can use adaptive exercise equipment, accessible fitness areas, and they've got walking paths, an outdoor patio, a Southern-style porch, a screened-in gazebo, and gardens for those who like to be out in the fresh air, not to mention the gardening plots if someone likes to dig and plant. There are common areas with fireplaces, bookshelves, game tables, comfortable chairs, and big TVs, and people gather in the resident's lounge for activities, music, arts and crafts, or just to chat. Brookdale Asheville Overlook offers restaurant-style dining in a dining room with scenic mountain views, where chefs serve nutritious meals, and they make dietary changes for things like diabetes, low fat, vegetarian, or low salt needs. Residents join in on outings, literary activities, games, hobbies, and there are field trips, religious services, and facilitated events happening regularly, and for those who like their routines, there are also scheduled rides for errands or to medical appointments. Residents can bring pets, except small dogs, so animal lovers don't have to be alone, and the property has safety features like emergency response systems and round-the-clock emergency staff. Brookdale manages the community and has been doing this work since 1978, and there are different care levels, including memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement options all on the same campus, which means people can stay in the same place even if their needs shift over time. They encourage a warm, homelike atmosphere that's wheelchair accessible and designed for people with limited mobility, and they focus on shaping each resident's care to match the level of help needed-letting folks keep as much independence as they're able while providing more help if things change, so whether someone needs a little help with housekeeping or full daily care, the staff and resources are in place. There are educational programs, caregiving resources, lifestyle planning materials, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and even salon services on-site, so someone can handle the things they need in one location. Communal spaces offer people a spot to relax, visit, or take in the views, with homes designed to help everyone age with dignity and keep choices about their life and health as personal as possible, and while there's a nurse on staff part-time, the bigger focus stays on promoting wellness every day, which shows in the wellness and exercise programs, healthy food, and support for social connections, education, and hobbies.
