    Compassionate, clean, homelike, but pricey

I toured LaurelHurst/LaurelWoods with Michael and made it our top choice. My mother is happy, well cared for, and the staff consistently go above and beyond - compassionate, responsive, and professional. Apartments are bright, modern, very clean, and conveniently located; memory care feels homelike and safe. Meals are generally good but inconsistent and meat-heavy at times, and activities are nice though not always clearly scheduled. It's on the pricey side, but overall I'm relieved and would recommend it.

    About Laurelhurst And Laurelwoods

Laurelhurst and Laurelwoods sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains and gives off a warm, lodge-like feel, where folks can look out over an acre of sweeping views and often enjoy rides to see the changing leaves. The community puts a big focus on person-centered care, so people get the help they need with daily things like bathing, dressing, grooming, and managing their medicines while still keeping as much independence as possible. There's 24-hour supervision, an emergency call system, and staff including nurses, a medical director, and therapy specialists who are there to help with everything from diabetes care and incontinence support to transfer services for folks needing standby or two-person assistance-though the community mostly supports those who need light or medium care.

Memory care here uses Sonida's Magnolia Trails™ program, which aims to offer safe, secure living for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, with special exit alerts and trained staff who understand wandering or behavioral challenges. Private and semi-private memory care rooms with secured areas let people feel safe and allow families some peace of mind, and the program leans on individual routines to make life easier for memory care residents.

The property's got assisted living, memory care, independent living, and skilled nursing options so residents don't have to leave if their needs change. Apartments come in one- or two-bedroom layouts, with features like air-conditioning, private bathrooms, patios or balconies, and sometimes even full kitchens or kitchenettes. Rooms can be fully furnished if needed, and some spots allow pets, so dogs and cats can move in too. People get housekeeping services, help with laundry, and meals three times a day, including restaurant-style dining, room service for when folks don't want to leave their apartments, vegetarian and special diet meals, and snacks that residents say are tasty and satisfying.

The community's always got things happening, from art and fitness classes to game nights, bingo, gardening clubs, stretching, yoga, Bible study, and live music-plus special events and outings using the facility's 10-passenger van with a wheelchair lift. There's a library, game room, computer room, garden spaces, a fitness room, a beauty salon, and both indoor and outdoor common areas set up for folks to relax or socialize, and you'll find people watching old TV shows or listening to oldies with popcorn in hand. Some residents smoke outside, which is allowed on the grounds.

On the care side, staff can support people who need reminders for basic daily tasks, have mobility issues, or struggle with behavior or elopement risks. There's help for those using insulin, and therapists come for physical, occupational, and speech needs. Medical services connect with nearby hospitals like St. Luke's and Blue Ridge Laser Eye Associates, and regular doctor visits or check-ins with the medical director mean health needs don't get missed. The mental wellness program, memory care support, respite stays, hospice, and move-in help add a layer of support for residents and families.

Overall, Laurelhurst and Laurelwoods offers a simple, clean place for folks to live without fuss, with enough care options, activities, and pleasant surroundings to help residents feel good about where they are. Staff tend to get described as friendly and helpful, and the ongoing renovations keep things modern and comfortable. Rates for memory care start at $5,995 for a studio and around $5,200 for a semi-private room, with parking and transportation included. The focus stays on practical help and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere-where people are known by name, get to keep some routines from home, and don't have to worry about being left on their own.
