    Neglect caused infection and death

I am heartbroken and cannot recommend this facility. My family experienced neglect - a leg wrap left unchanged for a week, bedsores, infections and blood poisoning that led to hospice and what I believe was an early death. Some aides and therapy staff were kind, the meals felt home-cooked, and the rooms/grounds are nice, but the place was chronically understaffed, management often unresponsive, mail/cards left unopened during lockdown, medication/sanitation lapses occurred, and staff behavior ranged from compassionate to rude and dismissive. Overall the rehab and a few caregivers were excellent, but the persistent neglect and poor communication made the experience unacceptable.

    About Autumn Care of Drexel

Autumn Care of Drexel stands at 307 Oakland Ave in Morganton, North Carolina, as a licensed senior care community that's been around since 1979, and the place has 100 skilled nursing facility beds where staff work to provide skilled nursing, rehabilitation, long-term care, assisted living, and memory care, and that means the place can help with things like diabetic care, incontinence, non-ambulatory care, and the staff do seem kindhearted and focused on both medical and personal needs, and they follow a care-first approach called Saber C.A.R.E.S. which means they focus on the person, making care plans that fit each person's wellness goals. Many people know Autumn Care of Drexel for its home-like feeling, and families say the staff try to go beyond usual roles to help make daily life comfortable and safe, and the dining program's set up to make meals that are both nutritious and pleasant-meals get planned and cooked by chefs, giving everyone something to look forward to at the table. The facility offers activities like group events, devotional times, and holiday celebrations; residents can join in activities throughout the year, such as Christmas gatherings and other seasonal events, so people get to know one another, and it creates a friendly, lively atmosphere. Autumn Care of Drexel also gives short-term rehabilitation for folks recovering after hospital stays, long-term skilled nursing for people who need steady help, and respite care when families need a break or support. There are independent living, assisted living, memory care, and dementia care options, and all services come with individualized care plans made by a team led by long-serving clinical leaders with nurses who know the work well, and the team tries to support each need, whether it's medical or personal. Residents have access to common areas and spots for activities, with staff to help them take part in what they like most, whether it's just relaxing or joining a group. The community has earned a Best of Senior Living Award and an American Health Care Association award for achievements in areas like keeping people out of the hospital, improving satisfaction, handling medications with care, and helping with mobility, and people living there and healthcare professionals have given the facility a five-star rating too. English is the main language spoken by staff, but some also know other languages, and people who want details about next availability can ask since the facility isn't currently taking new residents at the moment. The administrator, Teresa Lowman, leads the community, helping to make sure safety rules like caregiver-to-senior ratios and regular inspections get followed, and the Saber Healthcare connection gives some things that are offered at other North Carolina locations too, so the care here isn't one-size-fits-all but really tailored. There's a pre-registration program for those planning recovery before surgery, and every resident gets a specialized program and a care plan that fits their goals, with nurses and support staff working together to do the best they can for every resident in the place.
