    Rough beginning, much improved later

I lived here nine months and had a mixed experience. Early on it felt dirty and unsafe - roaches/bedbugs, missing linens and hygiene supplies, unreliable hot water/AC, poor and insufficient food, unprofessional staff, medication errors and even theft. Lately management has improved cleanliness, staffing and morale and residents seem much happier.

    About Woodlawn Haven Rest Home

Woodlawn Haven Rest Home sits along 301 Craig Street in Mount Holly, North Carolina, and it's one of those places where folks can settle in for comfort, care, and steady help if they need it. The place can support up to 53 residents ages 55 and older, and they make room for those who need a little help or a lot, with different levels of care right on site. You'll find a fitness room for exercise, a book room for quiet reading, spaces outside to get fresh air, and nice indoor and outdoor common areas where people can meet up and talk. There's a hot tub and a steam room if someone wants to relax, plus they have their own hairdresser and a mobile stylist, so getting a haircut or a little pampering doesn't mean leaving the building.

Meals are cooked right there every day, three times a day, with special attention for folks who have health needs like diabetes or high blood pressure, and if you need help eating or with other tasks like showering, dressing, or getting ready in the morning, the staff are always around day and night. For those who need insulin injections or help moving from bed to a wheelchair, care is available, and they also help residents with incontinence or more involved medical care, too. Nurses, therapists, and even podiatrists visit, so health checkups or therapy are handled right on the spot, and transportation is available to get to doctor visits, shops, or spiritual services.

Woodlawn Haven calls itself a "rest home," and that's about right, because the place emphasizes a calm, steady way of life, where planned activities fill the days-everything from movie nights, art programs, and music therapy to animal visits, tabletop games, and group trips out into the community. Residents are encouraged to join in, but there's no pressure, and those who just want a quiet evening or a walk outside are welcome to do so. Spiritual support is available on site and through offsite trips, so folks who want to keep up with church or prayer can do that, too. Smoking is allowed in outdoor areas, which is a detail some may find important. Parking is available for residents, and for families who want to visit or stay involved, the feeling here is very much about people coming and going as they need.

People can come to Woodlawn Haven Rest Home for assisted living, memory care, respite care for short stays, or hospice care in the later stages of illness. The staff want residents to keep as much independence as possible, stepping in with help only as much as someone wants or needs, trying to treat everyone with dignity, and adapting as care needs change over time. Some rooms are private if someone wants more quiet, and others are shared for those who'd rather have company. The place is single-story and laid out so that doors and spaces are wide enough for wheelchairs and walkers, including the showers, and the whole setup is intended to allow folks to age in place rather than move again as needs grow. The staff often come from the local area and many have been with the home a good while, bringing stability and a sense of family, and the lawn and backyard are kept tidy for those who want to spend time outdoors.

Woodlawn Haven Rest Home may not be fancy, but it's known for a warm and welcoming setting, with staff around at all times, plenty of activities, health care support, and enough quiet corners for those who want something simple, steady, and comfortable as they grow older.
