Mayflower Manor Apartments has a long history in downtown Akron, sitting right on the bus line near the Akron Art Museum, the University of Akron, the Akron Zoo, and Civic Theater, and the place used to be the old Mayflower Hotel, which was built back in 1931 with that classic Art Deco style, so you see some real character on the outside, but all the apartments inside have been updated with new floors, cabinets, bathrooms, air conditioning, and appliances, and there's a secure entry system and a front desk that tries to keep things safe. It stands as one of the tallest buildings in Akron at 207 feet, once hosted important events-there's even a famous phone call about the beginnings of Alcoholics Anonymous that happened here-so you're living among history. The property offers rental costs that depend on your income if you qualify for Section 8, so most folks pay less than 30% of what they get each month, and there are rules for who can apply, mainly seniors over 62, those with disabilities, or people who need income-restricted options, and it's all HUD-approved. You get studio, one, and two-bedroom apartment options, all with big windows looking out over downtown, sometimes with views of the ballpark fireworks. Every unit has a 24-hour emergency pull cord, so help's always close if you need it. You can bring a pet and there's off-street parking, and you'll find laundry right in the building plus a fitness center, a community room where folks get together for activities, and different floor plans to suit what you're looking for, whether that's a small space or something with more room. Staff is known for being compassionate and looks out for residents. The grounds outside are kept tidy with gardens and well cared for plants, and while services are generally what you'd expect in affordable senior living, they do offer a safe, affordable place to live with a real sense of place, right in Akron's lively downtown, in a building that stands out for its history and style.

Beautiful building, severe management problems
I moved into a gorgeous older hotel with magnificent floors and a stunning chandelier, but my experience was awful. On move-in I found filthy carpet and a dirty stove, only one elevator working, erratic heating/cooling, constant renovation noise and no-notice entries for maintenance/spraying. Management is chaotic-multiple managers in short order, lost recertification/rental-assistance paperwork, poor phone etiquette and inadequate vacancy info-and some workers at the door couldn't communicate in English. Beautiful building, but severe mismanagement and unprofessional handling; check rent and paperwork carefully.
