    Warm home-like care with caveats

My mom lived here for years and I appreciated the warm, home-like atmosphere, wonderfully caring long-term staff who gave personalized, attentive care, clean private rooms, good communication and real peace of mind at a reasonable price. Be aware: management/communication can be inconsistent, there were rare incidents of mishandled or damaged personal items and billing/deposit issues, and the home isn't equipped for heavy mobility/wheelchair or complex medical needs.

    About Haven Home Assisted Living

Haven Home Assisted Living sits in the heart of Old Mentor on a peaceful, tree-lined street, and it looks and feels just like a real home, not a big building with lots of people coming and going all day. This adult group home welcomes up to 14 residents, so there's always a cozy and close-knit feeling. Staff keep a good 1-to-4 or 1-to-5 ratio, staying on-hand around the clock, and take care of all kinds of needs-from dressing, bathing, and medication management to laundry, housekeeping, and helping folks get around. Residents can choose between private or semi-private rooms, and all spaces are fully furnished for comfort and accessibility, like emergency call systems in bedrooms and bathrooms and a simple open floor plan that's easy to get around.

Meals here are homemade with three options at every sitting, whether residents eat together in the dining room, ask for room service, or have friends join in. Special diets are no problem, whether someone deals with hypertension or diabetes, and nutrition is a clear priority. People can keep their pets since Haven Home has a pet-friendly policy, and animals are always welcome as companions. Outside, peaceful garden areas let folks enjoy some sunshine, while inside, there's a book room, a hot tub, a steam room, and a variety of recreation rooms to enjoy. There's room for hobbies, games, and arts & crafts, plus regular scheduled events-movie nights, fitness and craft programs, music programs, and special social evenings, all organized by an Activities Director to keep things interesting.

The staff here include nurses, a traveling hairdresser or stylist, and a team that can help with dental, podiatry, and medical visits without needing to go out. Regular transportation takes residents to doctor's appointments, faith-based services, errands, and even outside activities and trips. There's full support for people who need two-person transfers or insulin injections, and care plans are designed to help with all stages of aging. They offer both respite and hospice care, too.

Bathrooms are set up so there's always access when someone needs them, and nurses keep an eye on things for health and safety. The entire place stays smoke-free inside to keep the air clean for everyone. WiFi and TV are available in the common areas, rooms are sized for comfort and privacy, and the whole building stays tidy thanks to regular housekeeping and handy laundry services.

Haven Home has been family-owned for over 20 years and carries two state licenses, including one from the Ohio Department of Social Services. They say the State of Ohio Licensing Bureau called Haven Home "impressive," and it's recognized in the top 2% of senior care providers across the U.S. and Canada. To maintain quality care, Haven Home limits how many people can live there and includes all services in its rates so there aren't extra fees popping up later. Veterans Affairs assistance, home sale guidance, and help with payments are available when needed. Residents can join on-site religious services or receive animal and music therapy, and there's always a sense of community. No smoking is allowed indoors, so those with sensitivities don't need to worry.

The goal here is pretty simple: create a warm, gentle, home-like place where seniors can keep as much independence as possible with help whenever it's needed. Staff believe people thrive where care and kindness are the foundation, and folks can settle in knowing there's support for daily life, high-level medical needs, and plenty of ways to stay active and connected with others every day.
