    Mostly negative experience avoid this

I had a mixed but mostly negative experience and would warn others to avoid this company. The facility and grounds are clean, meals are good, and some nurses and aides are genuinely caring and attentive. However staffing is inconsistent and often rude or unprofessional, communication is poor, promises aren't kept unless you nag, and I saw missed care (missed meds, delayed tests, even a fall) and repeated paperwork hassles. Rooms can be small/shared and residents can be lonely - staff try at times, but overall I can't recommend them.

About Shepherd of the Valley - Boardman

Shepherd of the Valley - Boardman sits on West Boulevard in Youngstown, Ohio, and offers different types of care for older adults, whether a person's looking for independent or assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, or short-term rehabilitation after being in the hospital. The place runs as a non-profit continuing care retirement community and accepts Medicare and Medicaid, so folks can get help as they need it without worrying as much about their coverage. There are 16 certified beds in the nursing and rehab area, and skilled nurses are on site up to 16 hours each day with a 24-hour call system in case anything happens. There's also an in-patient dialysis den, where Dialyze Direct helps residents who need hemodialysis care five days a week, so someone doesn't have to leave home to get this treatment.

The staff can help with medication, bathing, dressing, and moving around, and they watch over residents day and night, so families know someone's always there to help. For those dealing with memory problems, there are special therapy programs with multisensory approaches, all aimed at helping each person feel secure. Folks who need extra support at home can get in-home electronic monitoring and home health visits, and Shepherd of the Valley - Boardman even provides respite care if someone needs a short break from caregiving.

Rooms are private, cozy, and come with cable TV, kitchenettes, private bathrooms, telephones, air conditioning, and fast Wi-Fi, making them feel more like home. Residents also get weekly housekeeping, laundry, and prepared meals in a roomy dining area where special diets like diabetic or allergy-sensitive options are available. When it comes to things to do, the community keeps people active: There's an arts and crafts room, a library, a fitness center, walking paths, game rooms, and a full wellness center, not to mention group art projects, singing events with volunteers, and church services. There's a professionally staffed salon for haircuts and grooming, and the outdoor common spaces and gardens give residents spots to relax or join outdoor programs.

Transportation is available for appointments and outings, while move-in coordination and concierge services can help settle new residents in. People here can take part in activities that keep the mind and body busy, like music nights, competitive games, movie nights, and even resident-run clubs. The place runs resident and family councils to let everyone talk about concerns or suggestions. Medical support's always nearby, and there are emergency alert systems to keep everyone safe.

Shepherd of the Valley - Boardman is supported by the Lutheran Church, and serves more than 700 residents across its community. It's a maintenance-free, service-intense housing option that balances the need for care and rehabilitation with the chance for people to stay as independent as possible. The whole community puts an emphasis on a welcoming feel and treating each resident with compassion and respect.
