    Caring staff, severe neglect issues

I had mixed experience: my mom got excellent PT and some genuinely caring staff, and the courtyard, activities, worship space and salon are nice. But I also witnessed severe understaffing, neglect, alleged medication errors and narcotic theft, pests (bedbugs/roaches), poor/processed food, renovation-for-show tactics, and problematic case management. I would not recommend - run far and fast.

    About The Oaks Post Acute

The Oaks Post Acute in Orangeburg, South Carolina, sits inside a Continuing Care Retirement Community and offers both private and semi-private rooms that can give some comfort and privacy; so if a person needs skilled nursing care day and night, help with daily living activities, or short-term rehabilitation from illness, injury, or surgery, the team here has a lot of experience and many nurses and staff have stayed with the community for years, which does seem to help residents settle in. They've got personalized meal plans worked out by a registered dietitian who tries to accommodate special requests and medical diets, and they keep close watch on nutritional status by tracking monthly weights, daily intake, and lab data, then talking it over in care meetings to make needed changes.

Residents get daily wellness checks, and the facility supports them with transportation services, emergency response systems in place, and 24-hour skilled nursing care. You'll find the usual post-acute care amenities, like a business office manager to help with paperwork and billing, social services folks who step in to help with transitions and care planning, and an admissions coordinator who keeps track of insurance, forms, and rules. They accept Medicare and Medicaid, and rehab programs cover physical, occupational, and speech therapies, with updates from the rehab staff and an onsite Medical Director for medical services. The place puts effort into infection prevention, so there's a dedicated nurse who sticks to COVID-19 and disease safety with PPE use and training.

For social life, there's an activities department, with daily options that include music, outings, fitness, religion, and social groups, and special events like birthday parties, ice cream socials, or candlelight dinners; the staff encourages family visits, pets (with rules), and even private events in the lounge with some notice. Residents can have cable TV and phone access in their rooms, the building has WiFi, and clothes go through laundry services washed hot and labeled for tracking-something the facility asks families to help with when new residents move in.

The community offers a non-smoking environment, though designated outdoor areas are set aside for those who smoke. Residents get their mail delivered daily on weekdays. They can leave for short home visits with doctor approval, but need to sign a logbook before they go.

Health inspections and staffing levels have been rated much below average, according to industry ratings, and this is worth knowing if you're comparing care options, though visits from doctors are regular, usually at least every thirty days, and there's a Director of Nursing watching over clinical care. The facility keeps a home-like atmosphere, has done some recent renovations to improve comfort and safety, and outdoor areas for relaxation look pleasant enough. All told, The Oaks Post Acute gives access to nursing care, memory care, palliative and hospice care, lots of daily activities, and medical support right in the Orangeburg community, with insurance help and several decades of experience caring for older adults.
