    Nice facility, leadership severely lacking

I wanted to like this place - the rooms are clean and well-kept, activities are plentiful and the activities director is enthusiastic, and a few staff (e.g., Mike, PTs and some CNAs) were excellent. But my overall experience was soured by chronic understaffing and overworked, sometimes verbally abusive or bullying staff, poor communication, and unresponsive management despite formal complaints. I saw neglect: infrequent showers, lost belongings, small portions/poor-quality food, privacy and safety concerns, staff turnover and gossip. It looks nice and has good programs, but leadership and staffing problems need urgent fixing before I'd recommend it.

    About Calhoun Convalescent Center

Calhoun Convalescent Center sits in St. Matthews, South Carolina, under the county of Calhoun, with an administrator named Angela Pauling, where folks from all backgrounds get care without regard for race, color, national origin, religion, gender, orientation, age, or disability, including illnesses like AIDS or HIV and related conditions, which means you'll see all kinds of people being treated with the same respect and dignity. Staff pay close attention to safety, following CDC and CMS guidelines, wearing protective gear, cleaning often and encouraging social distancing, and they take pride in keeping things clean and orderly so there's as little risk as possible for anyone staying there. The center offers personalized skilled nursing that tries to meet every resident's needs, whether someone's got a chronic illness, just got out of the hospital, or is recovering from surgery such as a femur fracture repair or a below-knee amputation. You'll find both inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy, and help with basic activities so people can get moving again, and those who come in for care after heart trouble, sepsis, or respiratory failure get support as they build up their strength. Folks who need wound care or prosthetic help after an amputation get attention, and others who deal with health concerns like COPD, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, or cerebrovascular disease have care options as well, and there are services for those with congestive heart failure who might need wound management and mobility support, and the staff pays attention to each person's unique medical situation. They accept Medicaid, Medicare, private pay, and LTC Insurance, so there are payment choices, and the building itself has amenities and features that focus on comfort and recovery, giving people a better shot at healing even after tough times. Caregivers work throughout the week except on holidays, and all in all, the center works to give residents the professional, honest health care they might need when staying for recovery or managing ongoing health problems.
